Hawaii plays hard. Hopefully they put up a good enough fight for chip Kelly to have to open up the play book. I think it benefits LSU a lot getting an updated look at UCLA’s personnel and formations. LSU will definitely get new ideas from this game.

This. Hawaii is a good enough opponent to force you into actually preparing and forming a game plan around.

I've found that the first game typically has a bunch of inadvertent penalties and special team errors. It'll help UCLA work the kinks out.

I’m looking forward to working out a few kinks on the grill before I really get into it come early September.

UCLA getting game reps prior to playing LSU is an advantage for them.

LSU getting to see UCLA in action prior to playing is an advantage to us.

What we should hope for is that Hawaii puts up a fight and UCLA can't be overly vanilla in that game. How the game actually plays out will dictate how big of an advantage it may be.

It absolutely helps to play a tune up game before a game against a good team week 2. It shouldn’t matter because LSU is better but of course it helps UCLA.

The old saying is teams improve the most between weeks 1 and 2.

Virginia Tech pulled this on LSU in 2002 and smoked LSU after they had a tune up week 1.

It's clearly an advantage. If you ask any coach or football expert they'll tell you that a football team tends to make their biggest jump in improvement by far from game 1 to game 2.

While I understand your logic and more or less agree with it, there a HUGE DIFFERENCE between early 2000s VT and the current UCLA program. Almost the entire Pac-12 has fallen back from the rest of the pack.

I said it helps but shouldn’t matter because LSU is better than UCLA in my post.

It's definitely a positive to get in a live game first, regardless of opponent. Gives the UCLA coaches and players a chance to work under a clock with refs, deal with substitutions, penalties, etc. There's no substitute for getting in good reps in a game situation.

That said, it won't help them when LSU hits the field.

Does it help them? Absolutely. Does it help them enough to make a difference? Absolutely not.

Of course, it helps them because teams make their biggest jump in improvement from their first game to their second game, but nevertheless, at the same time, it doesn't mean they have an advantage over LSU. As they know nothing about LSU because LSU has brand new coordinators and also because man for man, LSU is far more talented than they are.

No. Being able to play a real game and gaining experience and reps before their biggest game of the season couldn’t help them at all. Maybe even a disadvantage. We should have Bama first on our schedule every year. Experience and practice are overrated.

BYU did the same thing a few years back and we still spanked them.
