Does anyone else think that our main problem is the line?

If they could run block better, we would have a better run game, which would take pressure off of JJ. Also, if they could give JJ a little more time to find the open man, maybe JJ wouldnt take so many sacks. If our line improves, i think we could challenge Bama and UF and get back to where we belong.

O-line was a major problem last year but the coaching has to be there as a "1a/1b" type of thing.

Interesting theory. Had not thought of that angle.

Line was a problem last year, and it was magnified by JJ taking a 5-7 step drop from shotgun. He was hindering his own ability by dropping back so far and making his throws take longer and travel further. We made some defensive lines look great last year

Fear The Hat!

Fear the guy who keeps Crowton around.
Fear the guy who keeps Studawa around.
Fear the guy who let Porter play silly games with the RBs.
Fear the guy who loves bendbutdon'tbreak defense.
Fear the guy who demands running up the middle with no proven center.
Fear the guy who forgets to call timeout.
Fear the guy who lies to protect his reputation.

If we'd had Bama's o-line last year, we'd have gone 10-2 or 11-1. I don't know if our o-line is our main problem ... but I do know a better o-line would solve a few of our other problems.

your observation is not the first of this kind.

consensus indicates its ONE of the issues the team faces.

others: who is the captain of the offense? Will JJ show up?
Will J Lee throw passes in the flat with assurance and deft, giving rise to hope of the national championship? (I know this is not the OP thread, but if J Lee can suddenly master the touch pass, with his arm for the long one, LSU would be able to beat anyone, on the given day.

THIS IS THE CRUX OF THE MATTER:
Does OC GC let a power running game happen?
We have to assume sanity, so I infer from what happened in the Ole Miss game, that OC GC did not think he had the running game to make a first down with a minute to go. Nope. He threw a pass. Is this from a contrarian guess game? Does he think he is being tricky? Or is he chicken shite?
I would pound the ball, in that situation. A guy should exist on that team to whom you can hand the ball and he heads to the line of scrimmage. Someone should volunteer to block for that play. I am nominating K Theriot.
I realize that if you hit on the pass, you are either looking at a TD or an easier field goal. However I want to be able to presume that my line and my FB can get one yard, with the game on the line. I did not see that, vs Florida, Bama or Ole Miss, on the part of LSU or OC GC.

In all seriousness, everyone knows that the line is where it all starts and that last year's OL play was pretty dismal. Again, overstating the obvious but, if you can establish a running game then you can keep the defense honest and it makes pass protection and throwing the ball easier. A little bit of improvement can make an exponential difference. Most importantly, the game should slow down quite a bit for Jefferson.

Ahh, there's the rub.

If the defense sells out against the run, you HAVE to be able to pass the ball.

I predict that if our receivers can be defended man-to-man, we will not be able to establish a running game.

That certainly wasn't the problem last year.

Good coaching will work around an inadequate offensive line. U. of Texas didn't have a stellar offensive line last year either. Had better play selection and a QB who could react better.

By "it," do you mean the wrong answer?

Anyone with any football knowledge could see that our offensive schemes, play calling, and player development on the offense side of the ball was terrible last season. But this shouldn't come as a shock to anyone who has ever looked the trends throughout Gary Crowton's coaching career.

I agree with this. The coaching scheme did not play to the players' strengths, and not only did it cause us to struggle against opponents, it seems the players struggled within themselves as well.
