I have read/heard Les credit special teams coach Thomas McGaughey for "recognizing the opportunity" at least 3 separate times since the game, including last night at the Coaches show.

The applicable rules are as follows. Note the penalties range from a safety against the defending team (or upholding of a touchdown if the kicking team recovers it in the end zone) to simply a first down and yardage for the offense. Probably too risky. Note also these rules don’t seem to apply if the kick falls short of the crossbars without interference
I. Team A attempts a field goal from Team B’s 30-yard line. A Team B player in the end zone leaps above the crossbar and bats the ball in flight. The ball goes out of bounds in the end zone.
RULING: Foul for batting the ball in the end zone. During regulation play, postscrimmage kick enforcement gives a safety by penalty. In extra periods, enforcement of the 15-yard penalty is at the previous spot
and Team A retains possession.
II. Team A attempts a field goal from Team B’s 30-yard line. A Team B player in the end zone leaps above the crossbar and bats the ball in flight. The ball goes into the end zone and is recovered by Team A.
RULING: Foul for batting the ball in the end zone. The result of the play is a touchdown.
III. Team A attempts a field goal from Team B’s 30-yard line. A Team B player in the end zone leaps above the crossbar and bats the ball in flight. The ball goes into the end zone and is recovered by Team B.
RULING: Foul for batting the ball in the end zone. The result of the play is a touchback, safety.
IV. Team A attempts a field goal from Team B’s 30-yard line. A Team B player in the end zone leaps above the crossbar and bats the ball in flight. The ball goes into the field of play.
RULING: Foul for batting the ball in the end zone. During regulation play, postscrimmage kick enforcement gives a safety by penalty. The ball remains alive, and Team A may elect the result of the play. If Team A recovers, does not score and accepts the penalty, or if the play occurs in an extra period, enforcement is at the previous spot.
…
VII. Team A attempts a field goal, and B23, in the end zone, goes above the crossbar and catches the ball.
RULING: Legal play.

Wow. And I thought "goal-tending" was a BASKETBALL infraction!

What happened on that play was a pretty basic coaching move.

Really? Hasn't been a missed FG returned for a TD in college ball since, what, 1964? It was so basic they didn't have a category for the return yards. Whatever.

I know what Les said, but they put the punt return team out there and lucked into it. Beckham had to be told to get into the endzone as he was originally at about the 10.

In this context, LUCK is when preparation meets opportunity.
He said he was put in there because the "chalk" was they would NOT try the long FG and was likely going to pooch-punt.
However, the team was PREPARED for the OPPORTUNITY that presented itself.
It won't hurt to say "well done, guys"
Try it. I promise it will not harm you

There's always someone back there on long kicks.

OBJ ran out there by himself. The coaches were eating grass.

I personally think the call, to allow Beckham to return it, was gutsy rather than smart. LSU would have automatically had the ball at around the 50 on the missed attempt. In Les' time at LSU they have had some memorable STs plays that have been exceptional.

yes our spc teams coach recognized it

At that point in the game is it really that gutsy? What's the difference between starting near the 50 or near the 30 when the game is well in hand? If it was the 4th Q and we're down by 3 with 1:30 left. Then, yes, that's gutsy, borderline stupid.

The coach needs to have that automatically in Beckhams head.
It's nor OBJ's choice. It's the coach's prerogative.
You know that Louisville QB tried to send back the punt team his coach had sent on the 4th down. It was not the QB's call.

BHP - you are in a zone in this thread.
Yup. It was a well done job.

les miles is the ceo. he doesn't go to all the practices; just sits in his office and gets reports from the other coaches. if you read the rant you should know this type of thing.
