Kelly was a solid coach. He took the LSU job to retire upon and started slacking.
He thought the talent would make up for his lack of effort. He was wrong. But he was a solid coach at ND.

He knew he could sell Kelly to the fans. That’s all that was

Kelly was hired as “the adult in the room” after the PR blunders CEO had in his final 2 years (bed picture, sissy blue shirt, didn’t interview Bo, shirtless running in Destin, call in show threat, etc…). On the outside - Kelly was someone who would instantly give credibility back to the HC role. Did that work out in the end? No, but Woody was looking for the complete opposite to CEO.

No his biggest crime was being lazy. He had an elite offense in 23 and decent offenses in 22 and 24. This was the first bad offense. He mailed it in while he was here which is why we always had a fatal flaw on each of his teams.

2025 offense

His biggest crime
Hmmm, let's see, that's a toss-up:
1) hiring crap coordinators
2) no involvement in recruiting (except at photo time)
3) very little "hands on" as a coach
4) cheating the program and his wife
5) stealing $10 million a year
That's a start.

They share the same agent and CBK was really the last option on the board. Who else could we have hire that year that we really wanted ?

Agree. Also think he glossed over things that, upon closer inspection, may have given pause in order to land a big name.
