Did JJ say why he started Eyanson?

I’m not taking issue with his strategy, I’m just interested in learning about his reasoning.

He gave a few reasons, one of them was the potential for bunts and whatnot, which he likes Eyansons athleticism to deal with that.
That could have been bullshite, but it’s one thing he specifically mentioned.

Force DBU to go against the best lefty in the country

Key thing he said was if things went how they planned, he could pull E and due to his athleticism, he could be used in relief if needed.

I also read he said if he has to bring either Eyanson or Anderson in a closer role on Monday night, he feels more comfortable with Eyanson in that role, so he would need to start Friday for him to be available for that role.

Going to the game yesterday, we wondered if that might be one factor. We wondered if Eyanson could “recover” quicker than Anderson and thus be able to relieve if needed late in the regional.
Thxs for the responses guys.

Because DBU struggles a lot more with left handed pitchers. And since Anderson is probably the best left handed pitcher in college baseball that’s probably why Jay made that decision.

One thing I wondered about was why Arrambede didn't catch for Eyanson. Earlier in the season JJ said that it was better for Arrambede to catch for Eyanson than the other starters.

Because he thought it was the best choice?

I’m wondering if last year’s regional and what happened with Jump had him thinking about this.

I think Eyanson has proven to be durable and has stamina. I think he felt if he was on, he could go deeper in the game to save bullpen. It worked out well I think. We will need a fresh bullpen for this tournament. I hope Anderson can do the same

Which is exactly why he used Eyanson as a closer at Hoover so it wouldn’t be a first time experience in the postseason

Game 1 winners win the regional 80 something percent of the time. Win tonight your 90 something percent of the time. Either eyanson or Anderson was pitching game 1 and the other game 2.
