Another memory is when the just retired coach of Florida State was given the unheard of raise to $800,000.00 a year and that was simply outrageous.

I believe Mac never even made six figures until maybe his last few years.

Coach Mac played for Coach Bryant at Kentucky

can't see it that well since its b/w and they both wore dark, but McClendon is #87 on the left avoiding Oklahoma's #45 trying to tackle #40 ,Leon Heath in Kentucky's 13-7 upset of #1 Oklahoma in the 1951 Sugar Bowl.

Alabama almost did in 1970. The Miami Dolphins came to Bryant after the '69 season and Bear kinda sorta agreed . The Alabama chancellor David Matthews wanted Bryant to find a comprable replacement and Bryant looked to Coach Mac and wanted him to replace him. Obviously that all never materalized and Miami hired Don Shula and Bryant stayed with the Tide.

Why would anybody want a defensive head coach only. Offense was run the first 2, pass on 3rd and punt on 4th. Consistently a 7 and 3 coach. If Miles is not carefull he will be similar at 8 and 4.

Other notes about Cholly Mac

Only coach who played under the Bear to beat his team twice.

Also when Paul Dietzel was hired, he was required to keep the current staff.
That also included Bill Peterson

McClendon was a coordinator under Dietzel and when Paul Dietzel left for his dream job at Army (I swear he said that)

Yeah, I watched Dietzel say he would never leave LSU, and then poof, he was gone. My dim memory is rumors about involvement with the wife of a prominent BR resident influenced his decision. Anybody else remember that?
