He has been back and forth and I thought last week was his worst game at LSU. But he made big plays yesterday and made really good decisions. He is 5th in the nation in TDs. We only threw 24 times yesterday and 3 of those passes were TDs (another was called back).

He has had 28 passing TDs to 5 Ints. in his career so far. Those are great numbers. His accuracy and mechanics are still clearly issues that he needs to continue to work on, but he also makes some great throws/big plays at times. Between last year and this year, he has helped LSU win 3 SEC games where we were missing two of our top WRs (and last year we won those games without both of the top RBs too).

Max in 2 games vs Florida without his best WRs:

6 passing TDs
0 Ints.

Florida QBs the last 2 games vs. LSU

6 passing TDs
6 Ints.

Max does need to improve on deep ball, but it’s laughable to say he’s wildly inaccurate.

At times, he is.

Agreed.

And to do that, he needs to be able to step into the throw

And to do that, he needs a consistent pocket

And to have that, the OL has to be able to hold a block long enough.

Only a few times this year does it seem like he's had enough time for the play to develop and have a clean pocket to work with.

Can still win championships at the college level. Football IQ is more important.

He hasn't shown enough football IQ to get LSU to the playoffs. Right now he's a QB who runs the plays called. Until he's able to marry the play call to the defense and understand where his advantage is in the run or passing option, he will be a good not great QB. He has talent, and his arm is more than strong enough to hit the big play and throw to the boundaries.

But he's only started 9 games over 2 years. He's still learning, and if things work out and Peetz is here next year I think Johnson can go to the next level and be an All-American QB.

I agree with all of this.

With better support Max can be a very good QB for LSU and lead the team to successful seasons. Some folks on here get very sensitive if you critique a player/coach's performance/talent. I like Max and started this thread to credit what he's done. That doesn't mean I won't also discus his flaws/limitations or where he needs to improve.

I disagree to an extent. He does have to deal with a lot of pressure up front, but sometimes he needs to anticipate and cut the ball loose rather than wait. That will come with time. Even Burrow had to learn how to do that from 2018-2019.

He'd had 4 more TD's if he could hit open receivers in stride.

In all honesty, LSU could be 6-1 if he could hit them also.
