Im also not sure he fits well as a leadoff.

Why? He has elite OBP skills. He’s not a speedster but he’s athletic and runs the bases well and also has the power to start the game with a homerun. I’m not seeing anything from him that I don’t like in the leadoff spot.

I think a lot of y’all make decisions about players early in their career and never revisit them.

Probably trying to catch up for the 4 games he missed.
But yeah, he does need to chill a little bit.

I guess im using his other 3 years as precendent, but he has alot of holes in his swing and K’s a bunch. Granted he has kept that down so far this year. last year he did have a good penchant for getting hbp the little time he was healthy

He struck out a lot in 2021 but he still slashed .295/.407/.641.

That was also the year he hit 19 homeruns and led the SEC in RBI’s.

He’s being asked to take different at bats this year and I think he’s been showing he’s capable of being more disciplined when he’s being asked to set the table.

All of this could go out the window once we start facing SEC arms but nothing Dugas has done this year tells me he can’t be our leadoff guy all the way to Omaha.

Exactly, thats burned in my brain. Hes who i want at 5 or 6 for that reason. A bit of a free swinger. Maybe he’s fixed it, but we wont know until we get to SEC

What about .295 and .407 isn’t great for a leadoff hitter?

We have guys with more power and more free swingers for the 5 hole. Jones/Jobert/White are prototypical 5 hole guys.

Dugas could be in that role and do it at a high level but none of those guys can lead off. Dugas can and has been doing it very well.

And I think Dugas was hitting like a 5-6 hole hitter in 2021 because he was placed in that role more often than not.

Think he was hitting 3-4 more towards the end of that year, but that was somewhat an indictment on that team
I dont really wanna debate about dugas anymore because he is already my favorite player, so i hope he can be that guy

Hey you said it

I appreciate his skillset but it’s not what I want at leadoff. He’s a run producer. His OBP skills are fine, but they are HBP dependent. Strikes out too much for my liking to hit leadoff. But hey there aren’t that many options outside of Morgan

That’s possible. Thought I remembered him hitting 5th most of the year but I could be wrong.

However we relied a lot on his ability to to put the ball in the seats and drive in runs. We’re in a luxury position where he doesn’t have to do that and we can rely on what he’s truly good at which is getting on base.

And that’s exactly what he’s doing. He’s punishing mistakes and spitting on the bullshite.

I’m on record here saying that I didn’t think Dugas was one of our best players this year. He’s changed my mind in seven games. He’s done everything asked of him at an elite level so far.

I’m not sure either but two pretty damn good coaches have had him and aren’t using him there.

Those two guys know more baseball than we will ever know. I’m going to go with the easiest assumption. The kid isn’t comfortable there.

He’s too good at everything I think. I feel like Jay wants to separate the swing & Miss guys with Dylan & Morgan.

Morgan is a tone setter though with the way he takes at bats & makes contact. He should hit leadoff

Good question, but they must have a reason.

Defense through first 7 games has been good enough to win a championship.

Could be this. I do remember a story about him going into jay’s office to ask him what he wants him to do to get better, and jay saying he swung at too many pitches out of the zone… could be that i guess.

He’s been hit by one pitch so far this season and has been on base over 60% of the time.

And getting hit by a pitch isn’t just luck. He makes them come inside on him and he crowds the plate. If they miss in cool they hit him and he’ll happily wear it. If they miss over the plate he punishes it. It’s a product of what he brings to the plate.

He looks extremely confident right now…for whatever reason. Baseball …sorta like golf…is a lot about mental toughness. It’s a hard game to conquer.

SS is very difficult to play at a high level. Add in an injury and you are bound to struggle.

JT’s tools have always been there. Being healthy and working hard have paid off.

Over .990+ team fielding % thru 7 games won’t hold up for an entire season, but I would love to see this team field .980.

I didn’t say it was luck. It’s definitely a skill. But it’s not something you can bank on like a guy that walks because he sees the ball well.
