Well everyone has to start somewhere, we know this He’s Young, worked with superior defensive athletes, and the players love him. But every time you have doubts turn on Miss St game(last year) it’ll help to know any warm bodied human will be better

To me I believe for college defenses it’s more about talent than anything.
16 years ago, I would have agreed with you, today probably not.
Offenses have clearly taken the lead and I think alot of that has to do with attacking coverages more than anything. One of the reasons we were so efficient under Aranda was due to how good we were disguising what we were doing, especially with who was rushing.
I think Jones was hired in large part because he's close with his players and an effective teacher, arguably Pelini's biggest pitfall that played a large role in last year's shitstorm.
Schematically, I'm not very optimistic he'll bring much to the table to slow down modern elite offenses. The fact that he's been a position coach for 12 years at 8 locations leads me to believe this.
I expect to see fewer broken coverages, and fewer yards and points given up overall, but not much better than average or slightly above within the conference.
I hope I am wrong, and will gladly eat crow if we do. I just would have preferred someone with recent DC experience with good results.

I gonna go out on a limb and say he can't be any worse than Pellini

As usual, all the Pump Lump Cheerleader types are ignoring the "Concerns" and moving full speed ahead with the Pom Pom waving.
Yeah. True fans hoping for the best. No sense letting that go un-criticized. Should they/we hope for less than success?
quote:And this is...what? Unreasonable? Not demanding enough for you? A fan hoping for better than the shitstorm that was the defense last year? Should he be grinding his teeth to come up with something more serious than a conversational "hoping for better" just to appease you?
Improvement over the "Worst of all-time" LSU Defense, doesn't mean Good or Great, just better than last year.
quote:These go together. I'd guess that there are more than 20 or so tRanters who've said they'd hoped for more college experienced coordinator hires - particularly on defense. (Probably a real low-ball estimate.) Innovation and change is always a gamble but to a man, they have all said they will support the new guys. That's not blind adherance to loyalty. More of a reasonable hope for success for our coaches and team, I'd say.
There's no evidence that an NFL DB Coach can effectively coordinate a Defense in the SEC, make adjustments and get everybody on the same page with their assignments. It's all a big MAYBE.
Would have much preferred somebody that's actually done that in the last decade. Big gamble here.........
I think you and I have had difference of opinions before but I seem to remember some solid takes and don't believe you are an a-hole. Am I wrong?

I think he is doing an EXCELLENT JOB.
I haven't heard of one person, coach or player, tripping over loose electrical cords. I hear he has a system that uses different colored cord reels per the specific use of the cords. He is a determined man on a serious mission keeping the cords under control and providing a safe - no tripping - work environment.

He sounds intelligent and the players definitely looked more coordinated in spring. That's an encouraging sign. He's definitely a concern and it may take a few games for his scheme to mesh well with players. That's what I'm worried about how long will it take for them to feel comfortable?
On the optimistic side...it can only go up after Bo. There's no way they can be worse than last year. Chip Kelly's offensive pacing will be an excellent first game test for our defense.
Yep. Good stuff. Can't downplay Kelly and the time for them to mesh. Gotta hope that Harris/Ward/Major are up to the task. If we see Ryan/Davis/Langlois in that game it will mean they are for real studs that are getting snaps in situations where their strengths can shine---or one of the first three dudes has blown too many assignments. Let's hope it's the first part!

O said he was going to hire the best coordinators. He just needs more time to find the right ones.....

I have concerns about ours
You should, he was a third tier hire.

He can’t do much worse than the previous one and I actually think he’s going to be damn good. We will be looking for another one in three years.
