Sounds just like Bo. There have been just too many changes to modern defenses in the last 10 years. Bo couldn't adapt. The new guy I don't know. LSU should have hired the best current DC they could.

His number 2 (Blake Baker) and LB coach was a DC at Miami for two seasons. I am cautiously optimistic and hoping we have a lot of coaches with chips on their shoulders. If we can shut down UCLA, I will be really optimistic.

He was the DC/LB coach at Miami for 2 seasons and the Dc/LB coach at La Tech from 2015 -2018.

Cordinator

I think he is doing an EXCELLENT JOB.

I haven't heard of one person, coach or player, tripping over loose electrical cords. I hear he has a system that uses different colored cord reels per the specific use of the cords. He is a determined man on a serious mission keeping the cords under control and providing a safe - no tripping - work environment.

Theyr very much in different parts of their career.

Jones is an an up and commer and Bo is a has been.

Jones was a small school DC and then go consistent promotions to this point.

Bo we an elite DC got a P5 HC job at a blue blood, got fired, was a mediocre HC at a D2 school and then came back to be a DC.

Pretty difference when you actually look at their resume.

Jones is coming from the Viking who have one of the better Defenses in recent years.

He sounds intelligent and the players definitely looked more coordinated in spring. That's an encouraging sign. He's definitely a concern and it may take a few games for his scheme to mesh well with players. That's what I'm worried about how long will it take for them to feel comfortable?

On the optimistic side...it can only go up after Bo. There's no way they can be worse than last year. Chip Kelly's offensive pacing will be an excellent first game test for our defense.

I like the fact that he has coached db’s because our coaching has been shite on that side of the ball. While Raymond can recruit, his coaching has been suspect at best. With Bo, you would have thought he would have command of what they were doing last year, but it was just the opposite. He didn’t have those LBs protecting the dbs with their speed ie controlling the TEs and RBs. He coached with Bo at Nebraska so Bo likely trusted him to know how to teach his defense. They did improve over the season, but still.
Jones will need to be heavily involved.

The D-Line will be much improved from last year B/C there is more depth and I think a great D-Line coach. Linebacker play is unknown but with the addition of a couple of key players and a great coach there’s reason for optimism. DJ may not have been a DC but he will have an impact on how the secondary plays and probably will not get too unconventional pre and post snap. I don’t think he’ll need to. IMO the secondary could be the strength of this defense…..diametrically opposed to last year.

I have faith in Jones

O said he was going to hire the best coordinators. He just needs more time to find the right ones.....

apparently we had to have a black DC. So when the guy from Cincinnati went to ND we had to settle for another black coach that wasnt a DC at the time. Just wonder how many non-black coaches who were more qualified that didnt even get a shot.

I am rooting for the guy but it is what it is in this day and time.

The success or failure for 2021 will come down to this. Better get back to Mustang packages ans quick if they can’t cover RBs and TEs. Pretty simple.

How do you explain Ryan Nielsen then?

LINEBACKER

First-Team: Mike Jones Jr., LSU

Jones places this high solely because of his impact in the passing game. He is fresh off a season with the Clemson Tigers in which he posted an elite 90.2 coverage grade and was a blitz weapon with 11 pressures on 48 pass-rush snaps. His athleticism will be an asset to the Tigers, who no longer have to be too worried about the departure of standout coverage linebacker Jabril Cox.

To me I believe for college defenses it’s more about talent than anything. Get the talent simplify the defense and just let them do what they have always done. Be freak athletes and make plays. Offense you can scheme up lesser talent to beat defenses but I don’t think you can do that for a defense.

Strong take, Geaux.
There will always be plays schemed up to attack def players strengths/weaknesses---like the freakin' wheel route pick last season! But overall, simplified role responsibilities allow the athletes to read and react faster when something unfamiliar is happening.

It’s definitely harder to acheme around a lack of talent on defense. You can preach assignments and discipline but once you face a talented offense you’re gonna have issue. Even the best Cb are mostly just guessing where the WR and you need athleticism to recover when they make moves in their route. There isn’t much use knowing you’re assignment if you’re not athletic enough to get there.

I would Rather a middle of the road DC with the best talent than the best DC with middle
Of the road talent.

As long as the coach isn’t actively fricking things up and can teach the assignments I will Take talent every day.

There were multiple players in the team who played significantly worse than they did in 2019.
