Defense, really in any sport but especially football, is all about attitude and effort

It looks like we have 3 guys that play that exude both attributes listed in the subject line. Tackling is all about want to. It’s all about saying “I’m not letting you get passed me.” Tackling is not a talent thing, tackling isn’t a 5* vs 3* thing. It is a 100% attitude thing.

Defense takes true competitors out there to be good. The amount of times you see guys checking up while a guy is fricking blowing by them after getting beat because they don’t know wtf to do out there is extremely worrisome. The amount of weak arm tackles attempted by even our linemen is maddening.

Listening to someone like Brandon Taylor and Marlon Favorite discussing those types of things after the game makes me feel for them. They’ve got to be more pissed than us.

There’s an edge that is glaringly lacking with this defense. It’s soft. Talk about talent and scheme all you want, talent and scheme will not make up for softness. There’s no fight in them right now. I know Kelly has been trying to change the culture, and I agree that some aspects needed to be changed. However, it seems clear to me that the men he hired on the defensive side of the football have created a culture of softness, dullness and lack of will. We shouldn’t have 30 missed tackles in a fricking MONTH, much less a game.

If that culture is not changed, this defense won’t change.

I will say this: I think we should be better.

but there is also no substitute for talent on defense.

I’m not saying that talent doesn’t matter, I believe we have a pretty horrific talent deficiency on defense. I’m saying that it doesn’t take a 5* recruit to be a good tackler.

Remember when you guys kept making excuses for Pelini saying we had no talent? 9 or 10 of those guys are in the NFL now but instead of learning your lesson here we are blaming players for horrible coaching again.

This is the same board that thought a 6’ 210lb guy was going to be the next Lawrence Taylor. Are you surprised?

You’re 100% spot on and I’ve sensed it going back to last year. I’ve commented before that football is a war on the field. You need warriors out there. BK looks like he’s building bankers, not warriors. Following the FSU game, BK acknowledged the exact point you’re making calling it a lack of “competitive edge”. He fixated on that “mentality” all week before the Grambling game. Now it’s revealed itself again pretty glaringly.

I think House has a genuine issue. wants to play Zone with too many new pieces and those new pieces are young and probably haven’t played much zone in their life.

JBC and Garner were 5th year guys. Wars was a 5thbyear player too I think

that being said, I dont think Penn or Burns are going to be on NFl Rosters. or Savion Jones
