He's a more physical Simon with better range and cover skills. I really don't think he needs a redshirt. But that's just my opinion

We might not have the best defense in the country, but we are going to have too much talent to have a mediocre to shitty defense with John Chavis coaching them in my opinion

don't expect our defense to lose us any games this year.
I'm as big of a Chavis fan as any, but the defense was pretty mediocre at the end of last season, post-Bama. Certainly against Ole Miss, and at the end of games, the defense folded.

I'm not doubting his skills. He's a damn good corner. It's that he's barely over 170 and he'll be going against WRs that are pushing 190-200. Tre White is more ready physically.

Just looked up both of their Bios and Tre white is 170 and Robinson is 165.

The four I named are ready to play now:
Herron will likely emerge as the strongside backup to Jordan Allen. He could actually play inside too, giving us another versatile guy like Lacouture (btw, I saw Lacouture blow by L. Collins at least once from the end position - kid can get off the line for sure).
I expect Beckwith to get in the game as a pass rush specialist. I think he has the type of athleticism and instincts you just can't coach and just can't justify keeping off the field.
Melvin Jones will emerge as the backup MLB, and might overtake Welter. Don't expect this to happen by Week 1, however.
Tre White is the man. My guess is he beats out Holmes and Raymond almost immediately becoming our 4th corner.
We don't need contributions from the freshmen DTs (Gilmore, Bain). We don't need Robinson to play his first year. We shouldn't need Jefferson at S. Bower and Neal might play at end if Herron doesn't work out.

You can't expect your defense to dominate and carry you every game. After a disappoiting loss against Bama our season lost a lot of meaning. That said the still finished in the top 12 for the 4th season in a row.
That defense last year was good enough to win the SEC, the team just failed to reach that goal.

Defense has tons of talent and will get the starters and freshmen back in the fall. With Chavis coaching and our LBs being such freaks, our CBs having another year of PT, etc. I know we will be top 4 in conference in defense. Bama, UF, then maybe USC/GA/LSU.

We are going to have to have a lot of luck at the first of the season on defense. It takes a team some time to jell. By mid season we should be better.

Considering all the early losses on defense, 7 including Mathieu, next year will be a rebuilding year on defense—not reloading. Injuries could make for a very ugly season; four loses are possible.
Your tiger nation will have to wait a full season for a legitimate run at the SEC West crown in 2014. Cam's offense should be fully implemented by then, but with a first-time starter at the controls, you will probably have to wait until 2015 for a real run for the BCS playoffs.
2013-14, Bama or TAM vs Ohio St. for the BCS C.G.

Bama 2013
Ohio St 14
Is this the halftime or final score? I really don't see Ohio St. scoring that much.

number 1 defense shut out the number 2 offense. number 1 offense ran over number 2 defense. Perfect spring game
Strike that.....reverse it. Mett looked the same as last year. D-Line good. LB ok. Safety best. CB-meh.
Jennings.....Jennings.....Jennings
Put it this way John Chavis screaming at the 1st D could be heard in the stands.
Mett was committing rookie mistakes, delay of game, multiple over throws to wide open receivers, and was struggling with the roll out pass. He had some nice thrown balls as well as check downs. Jennings was just really smooth and fluid. The kid has a great touch on the football and his release is tops.

I don't know what a perfect spring game would consist of but I would expect the #1 defense to handle the #2 offense of LSU with ease and would expect the #1 offense to have no trouble with a #2 defense. Of course LSU's offense in the past has struggled mightily with even 1AA defenses so.....
As I've said before, the spring game means absolutely nothing, what Les Miles does on game day is what matters and we will play down to our opponents.

Jawja tiger,
I think you need to know this:
Defensive 3rd down conversions in 2011 - 33.98%
In 2012 - 31.8%
Does this make you feel better about your 3rd and Chavis fears?

I really hope I am wrong, but I think we are going to struggle rushing the passer this year.
We have two decent to good defensive tackles, but not one of them can win a double team or hold the point of attack against one. In my opinion anyway.
For point of reference I saw Logan win them some last year and Brockers routinely beat double teams a couple of years ago. I think in previous years where Defensive tackles occupied those blockers the Ends got exclusive one on one's and less attention.
Up to this point I don't see this happening this year. We need a playmaker to emerge up front. A player that requires two blockers. Either a Defensive end that requires a tight end or back to help double or a defensive tackle that requires center/guard, guard tackle attention.

What also bothered me was the post-Bama game defensive let-down. I'm willing to chalk that up to the "character" and chemistry of that particular defensive squad. Going into 2013, I don't see Chavis being willing to preside over such needless mediocrity.
But of course, there is still the general lack of experience to worry about.
