re: Deaf Valley...when did it change to Death Valley?

The term "Deaf Valley" is, was, and has always been a wordplay on the similar sound to "Death Valley" and the fact that the stadium was far and away the noisiest in the country, famed and feared for the deafening roar of the fans from pre-game to post-game. The sign (on the scoreboard as well as the one hanging on the press box) was always "Welcome to Death Valley", because that was the semi-official nickname for Tiger Stadium. And it in no way changed the fact that many people would also refer to "Deaf Valley" because of the intimidating noise factor,
I have been a passionate fan of LSU football and basketball since 1973 - and I was passionate to the extreme from the 70's through the 90's. I never heard it said or seen it written "Deaf Valley". No one ever did or there was never any sign but I can say I neither heard or saw of such a thing.
Now Deaf Dome....yes that was Dale's thing.

No such thing as Deaf Valley. Save face and delete your post.

Thanks Tigger1. This is what I remember discussing prior to the National Championship game with Clemson a few years back. The misinformation stemming from the 1940esque ‘deaf valley gas station’ and then Dale’s ‘deaf dome’ is understandable. It’s described and remembered differently in multiple publications.
I’m not the best at it but to no avail, searched the site to find the microfiche ‘death valley’ references from what I remember to be from the 1930s. I bet these are the Grantland Rice references that you mention.
Regardless - we do not have a graveyard with tombstones. https://clemsontigers.com/the-graveyard/

Geaux Guy You are welcome.
I retired from the railroad now and can do research again.
I am a historian, like today I had to tell a number of others on the 55-48 BC.
I may write a book on the subject of Custer's Last Stand which I have studied since 1972.
Back to LSU football I have worked on LSU since Paul Manasseh in 1976 when he gave me the football media guides of 74-75-76 and I stared to collect them, which lead to collecting the basketball and baseball guides also.
My first game at LSU s 1964, and yes it was Death Valley even then, my nephew was on the 2003 team. But while I was growing up Baton Rouge was a large town. My grandmother went to LSU on what would become the capitol grounds, this was around 1923, and the new campus was being built. As I posted my father was at LSU in 1950, but his frist game was around 1935. He even met Eddie Robinson when he was working LSU football games.
I need to get down to Baton Rouge and look up the newspapers, if old man Manship was still living he would have sent then to me, as I knew him since the early 1960's.
Yes, there is no doubt Tiger studium being called Death Vally and I can only prove from 1959.
My worse fear was realized years ago when a LSU football historian wrote a book and called it deaf valley in the 1990's, like I told Jimmy it would not take long for fans to mess the names up between Deaf Dome and Death Vally
I even posted to the old message board when Marty messed that name up.
The sign first said Death Valley, then Welcome to Death Valley. It never said Deaf Vally and I have picture in game days that show this dating to 1970.

Clemsons stadium would be 9th in the SEC for capacity. End of any “argument”

It was called Deaf Valley when I was a student back in the 70s.
I was here from the '65 season through the '68 season and it WAS called Deaf Valley!

I’ve always preferred Deaf Valley…it’s been a while though.

Maybe but I had tshirts with Deaf Valley on them in the 80s. It tried to stick around.

In the 70's it was painted on the west side of Tiger Stadium. "Welcome to Deaf Valley" someone changed it to Death Valley.

recalled the stadium being called "Deaf Valley" because "everyone's ears would be ringing for a couple of hours after a game."
Most of the "Ear Ringing" currently is caused by the Piped In Music Ultra Crap.
The Coliseum is now full of Corporates and Attention Whores, most of whom don't really give a shite about the Football Program or the University............

I could not agree more with Kool Kaliper’s comments. We have the original Tiger Stadium but Clemson is the original Death Valley. Clemson’s former coach for football, Frank Howard, brought back a rock from Death Valley and their (Clemson’s stadium) was afterward referred to as Death Valley by fans and the media as well as the school’s officials at Clemson.
