Daronte Jones and his Buzz Cover 3

The Cover 3 is utilized to defend the vertical passing attack and to make an offense dink and dunk. You have 1 safety and 2 corners each responsible for 1/3 of the field which allows for the linebackers to take the under zones and the defense to still have 8 defenders in the box for the run. It’s why a lot NFL teams prefer to run Cover 3.
But Daronte Jones typically runs what is known as a Cover 3 Buzz. Cover 3 Buzz plays with one high safety playing centerfield, 2 corners pressing verticals and 1 roaming safety who can appear as a cover 2 safety , nickel back or another linebacker. QBs despise this coverage because they have to determine whether the defense is in a true Cover 3, Cover 1 Man, or Cover 2. While the QB may diagnose the coverage correctly with pre-snap motion, the defense can adjust accordingly without moving and change their coverage by communicating signals.
This scheme doesn’t demand the most in physical skill-sets compared to man coverage, and is fairly easy to learn and run. The best corners in this type of scheme are saavy in terms of seeing and understanding routes and route combinations, communicating well, and having the short area burst to make a play on the ball/receiver. The modern prototype for a Cover-3 cornerback is Richard Sherman. (A lanky, rangy, physical corner.)
It’s no surprise Coach Raymond has a bunch corners at his disposal that fit the bill.
Stingley 6’1
Ricks 6’2
Flott 6’1
McGlothern 6’2
Raydar 6’2
Evans 6’3
McGhee 6’1
In terms of the other roles, you want a Free Safety that has great ball skills and is a head hunter similar to Earl Thomas. (Jay Ward apparently has been turning heads in practice for his closing speed and hitting ability)
The Nickelback/SS: Needs to be a versatile weapon. Someone who excels in man coverage, zone coverage, and can make things ugly in the run game. (Sage, Derrick Davis)
I know it all sounds good on paper but I can’t hide my excitement for this defense’s potential.

This is one of the better write ups I’ve seen on the rant. Well done!

Todd Harris is a much more natural FS.

This is where I think you will see ward make his money.
Sage and DD will likely see quite a bit of playing time, but not start as Freshman unless there is an injury or really poor game play from Harris or Ward.

I agree.
I think ward is more naturally a safety.
He is great moving forward. Can tackle and not afraid to hit.
I think sage will push for playing time as a nickel safety and derrick davis will push for time at free safety.

Shame I actually forgot about Todd Harris. I don’t believe there’s been a season with him at 100%. I’m hoping he breaks out.

Would you put him as a FS or a nickelback/ss near the box?
I personally think that he shows some of the attributes that Stevens has but is much better in coverage. The key would be him putting on 15-20 lbs without losing too much of his speed and quickness.

Yeah, I figured this was just an oversight. A healthy Harris is the starting FS, though.

I'd put him at free safety but he can probably play that nickel safety role too.
That might be how they use him.
Kinda shows where the safety depth chart is.
Ward is a good player.

Is Toles going to get left behind in our depth chart? With Ward moving in and Davis and Ryan coming him, where does this guy get playing time?

Saban's Defense at LSU didn't fully click until he moved Jack "Devery" Hunt from WR to Safety. (To be the Defensive QB calling the correct signals)
This will be Langlois's job here and it can't come soon enough. I sincerely hope he's learning the Buzz Cover 3 in the film room so when he first steps on the field, he'll be up to speed.
DCDJ will love him. (As will LSU fans)........

Do you honestly think that Langois will:
1. Be starting over Ward, Harris Davis and Ryan?
2. Calling defensive plays as a freshman with all of the defensive experience they will have on the field?
Surely this was an April Fool's joke, right?
I don't doubt that he's a smart kid and a hard worker. I don't even doubt that he's a quality player, but he won't see the field much next year, let alone be the defensive leader.

If he can outperform the others, he will play more. If not, he won't. It really is that simple. If he is "left behind" it will be because he either doesn't work as hard or doesn't have as much talent.

Toles seems like a really big safety.
Something isn't clicking for him
