On new defensive line coach Kyle Williams… Baker said he and Williams “really hit it off” personality-wise and praised the former NFL Pro Bowler for the impact he’s already making. Williams brings a philosophy built around creating havoc and vertical push on the defensive line — something Baker said LSU lacked at times last year. “This defense has always been about the defensive tackles being the tip of the spear,” Baker said. “We’ve got to be able to create knockback and havoc.” He added that Williams, who found NFL success doing just that, is already helping LSU’s linemen use their quickness to make more disruptive plays: “They’re starting to see themselves make plays, and now they want to do it more.”

I love this hire. My nephew was on the O-line at Ruston the past four years and had nothing but respect for the way Kyle got the D-line to tap into their own potential and make disruptions a common occurrence. “Tip of the spear” is a mindset, and is exactly how the big boys need to see themselves. A badass d-line makes everything else just a little more fierce on defense.

Yea, don’t hire former players, no experience coaching college, yada yada… I think LSU found a guy that can teach the d-line how to play to their highest potential. Also, he might even like to stay here a while. I feel as though he would already have his foot in the door in the NFL if he wanted to be there.

There is no better human than Kyle. He knows his stuff.

My issue with the hire is can he evaluate top tier talent and can he recruit? Two significant parts of collegiate football and we’re all hoping he knows what he’s doing.

I am all for that. However, LBs and Safeties have to be ready to clean it up when they disrupt a play and it goes off script. Great defenses do both of those things. Right now I still worry about our safety play.

LSU kind of recruits itself! If he has success they will come and I think a 6 time pro bowler knows what he's doing!

Well, even if this was true, I doubt he’d tell the media “this guy is shite and he’s not a good fit at all!”

The jury is still out on Williams. I’m still not crazy about hiring a high school defensive line coach. But hey, if Baker and he get along that is a good first step.

Meh, I’ve seen a number of DL guys leave the state for other SEC schools of late.

That’s my main takeaway I think… hoping everyone gets along and we can get some continuity on the coaching staff. I understand CFB is a carousel but damn if it don’t seem exaggerated at LSU.

I’d agree with you if the DL coach from Ruston High wasn’t a 12 year starter in the NFL that made the Pro Bowl 6 of his years while also being a BCS champion from the school he now coaches for.

Kyle Williams is one of the best to ever do it at his position. As great as he was on the field, he’s an even better human.

100% remember that quote. I’m the same age as KW (thereabouts) and followed his high school career since I was from North Louisiana. Dude has been a stud in everything his whole life. I have no reason to doubt his coaching or recruiting.

The best part of this hire is he brings that Saban mentality to this team

The issue is being able to identify the talent in the crowd. It's not about just how many stars some rating service attaches.

I have zero doubt Kyle can coach technique as far as defensive lineman. Nobody is asking him to run an entire defense. We have to wait and see on recruiting, but that’s as much about NIL now as anything.

You do leave out purposely that he is a 6 time pro bowler. Kyle wasn’t the most physically gifted player. He had to use very good technique to be effective. That’s what he is being asked to coach. His knowledge of defensive line technique and mechanics is definitely there. Don’t pretend like he learned nothing in 12 years of playing defensive line at the highest level.

This is a valid point, but you couldn’t put him a guy like Williams in a better situation than here. He’s working alongside a very experienced DE coach who he can learn from, which is a huge luxury. You also have a guy like Frank here to help on the recruiting side. He may not be a defensive mind, but he knows recruiting and how to do it in LA better than anyone. We also added Guidry to the analyst staff and he’s always been a good recruiter.

My point is that Williams isn’t on an island joining this staff. He won’t have to learn everything on the fly.

Agree. And he technically has that on his resume from Ruston…
Think people are forgetting he’s just being asked to teach technique and recruit. I have little doubt he can do either. He knows the position and is passionate about his alma mater, which helps in getting kids here. And can point to his resume in the league.
Sometimes a person doesn’t need to “prove it to me” first. You can tell when they just have It, and will have a decent floor of success in anything they do.

I think recruiting will be a strength with him. He has 5 kids who are just about all teenagers. The games I watched him at Ruston it was clear the players loved him and he them.
