Cowboys are expected to activate LB Damone Clark (neck) today from Non-Football Injury list. Remarkable milestone for player whom Cowboys’ medical staff informed at combine would need spinal fusion surgery. Clark had procedure in March. Has impressed team with focus, resilience.

I'm kind of surprised he is medically cleared to play football again. It would seem to me that spinal fusion would limit flexibility in the back and a weak spot in the spinal column. In other words, when the same load is applied evenly distributed to to the spinal column it would be the first to break due to the new longer bone length between flexible disk.

That's by message board engineering take. I would be interested in what his back surgeon thinks. Probably not possible or available.

Blake Baker did a great job getting Clark back on track. Poor guy was (like everything else) a mess in 2020.

Technically the levels above and below the fusion are under the most force (on either side of the rigid area) and why there is frequently breakdown of these levels first. Peyton Manning had the same surgery and was able to return and Delvin Breaux had a multilevel posterior fusion and was eventually cleared the play after several years.
I’m pretty surprised they have cleared him this early, typically it takes about a year for the bony fusion to occur.

Joe Montana had a cervical fusion back in the day and played at a high level afterwards.

If you are going to call someone an idiot, you might want to make a logical point so you don’t come out looking like the idiot.

It’s actually the disc spaces immediately above and below the fusion that take the most stress/force.

Because the fused area doesn’t bend or absorb force the same way, it translates it to the adjacent disc spaces

Totally makes sense structurally. Remove a joint between two adjacent joints, subsequent loads from the removed joint will translate the loads to the adjacent joints. (Just rephasing for my own edification.)
