ESPN had barely been on air in 1979. The first college football game on ESPN was in 1982

The 1979 game was the first football game ESPN broadcast and there were 3 teams of announcers:

USC team I have 2 copies of this one.
ESPN team I think it was Chet I have it somewhere in the dvd football stack.
and
LSU team Jimmy Taylor My friend has this on Beta but missed the last few minutes.

PROOF:

Look at the 21 second mark, that is one of the ESPN signs on the visitor side of the field.

ESPN was on RCA satellite at first, in 1978, when national in July 1979, started to broadcast on Sept 7 1979. By Sept the first weekend they were 24 hours on weekends and the other 5 days limited broadcast.

I still have Charles Whites hand towel in a box somewhere. It has the USC emblem printed on it. Dad was working game and snagged it for me.

Can barely make out JF call through the entire game for the crowd, I had never encountered that during all the years listening to the broadcasts all through the 60's, or 70's, except maybe end of OM 72!

I was 17 years of age close to the 50 yard line. Nothing compares to this game, not close. And I have been to some of the biggest games in Death Valley.

Swamp, I was 13. Rode the greyhound from Shreveport to BR and stayed with my cousin in Kirby Smith(I think). Sat in the student section. Went in as a huge USC fan came out a Tiger fan. Rember all the students chanting LSU as we walked out of the stadium.

I was a sophomore at LSU that year. Most intense and loud game ever attended.

Benji Thibideaux being called for face mask on the 3rd and long sack of McDonald went down in infamy as one of the worst calls in the history of LSU football. Negated the sack that would have left them 4th and something like 14 yes to go with only a couple of minutes left in the game. Instead...automatic 1st down with the 15 yd penalty, and USC ultimately scores with 31 seconds left to speak it out in the end.

1st time ever ( and bet We will never see it again) that our LSU Tigers received a standing ovation after a heart wrenching loss against a #1 rated team. We appreciated the valiant fight til the end and knew they got screwed by that supposed face mask penalty. Deserved to WIN that game.

Heard during the clip that a tackle by a USC player was made by Jeff Fisher.

that would be 84 at the LA Col a 23-3 W wasn't even as close the score. Tigers put a whippin on them Trojans that day!

This is what I'm looking for the most, to tell you the truth. The dvd is great, of course, but no way does it show how loud the game was. The radio broadcast has got to be much, much better for this.

It was a very disappointing effort from USC that day, but full credit to Dalton Hilliard and the many LSU fans in attendance, they were the only ones making any noise in the Coli that day. It was embarrassing.

Yes, they did not have that Hall of Famer team from 79 that year obviously and LSU was the better team that year; wondering any players of note on the 84 squad?

John Robinson was no longer the HC at USC in '84. I think Ted Tollner (?) was and seemed to flop. They did win the Rose Bowl that year. Of note USC had Jack Del Rio on their roster and Norv Turner and Dave Wannstedt were asst coaches.

Two questions:

Didn't USC and Alabama split the NC that year ?

Where is Laroid Jones these days ?

I think that was '78, IIRC.

Bama played USC and Nebraska in '77 and '78. They lost to Nebraska in '77 at Lincoln but beat USC in the Coliseum. In '78, they beat Nebraska in B'ham but lost to USC in B'ham.
