LSU lost to USC by 5 and Bama by 3 that year. And went 7-5

I was a freshman at that game. Couldn't talk the next day.

I was there with my dad we were in the bowl...section 419 and when we saw the flags and everyone around us thought it was going to be false start on USCs line man moving...the play should have been blown dead...

This. If the play had been ruled on correctly, then the facemask would not have been of any consequence. There would not have been a play, and USC would have been facing 4th and forever against a fired up defense, as opposed to 1st and 10 against a dejected one.

That one play changed the outcome of the game, without question.

Side note: I was there. Senior in HS. Went with my dad. Had to sit on the SC side though.

if a USC player did come on the bench and make a tackle on Gajan as Mac said he did

It happened: LINK. It was actually Woodley who got hit and apparently occurs at 1:54 in this video clip (watch #34, without a helmet on, take a dive and make contact). Carlos Carson told the ref, but the ref didn't care.

ESPN did not show the game.

ESPN was founded in September 1979, so I'm not terribly surprised.

(55 seconds into the clip) The announcer seemed a bit confused by the ref starting the clock before the chain gang was set
on the last play of the first half. If SC makes that field goal instead of rushing it, it would have changed the outcome of the game.

There were a lot of strange calls/no-calls by the refs that night...
