Astronaut had gone off in the 1980 SEC tourney a couple weeks before and carried Tigers to their only SEC tourney crown.

Was there in Birmingham to witness it in person. I remember that the 80 SEC Tournament was when B'Ham had the massive snow storm? We walked out of the B'ham-Jefferson Civic Center and everything was covered in snow.

Can anybody with spare time on their hands find a few historic photos of the Astronaut throwing down one of his infamous Sky Dunks and post them.

Scales was something else. He was 6'9" with offensive skills. He could grab the top of the backboard. Too bad he was a little too much of a head case. He was one of the most talented players to play at LSU. I try to imagine a team of Maravich, Scales, Shaq and a bunch of defensive stoppers and stiffs. That team could win it all now.

Sid Crocker's introduction of Scales was electrifying and would amp the raucous crowd into a total frenzy - DEWAAAAAAAAYYYYYNNE THE ASTRONAAAAAAAAUAGGGHHGTTTT SCAAAAAAAAALESSSS

Get a life or get over it!

At the time Dale was at LSU less than 50% (and very likely less than 40) of the players nation wide earn a degree form college.

Basketball was changing fast and the school were changing form an old style to a newer type of game that called for faster players with better skills. Going out the door was the old cut and slash type play of a much slower game to the new scoring game.

No school has ever sent 100% of it's basketball players to the NBA, wow what a surprise, not only that none have sent even 50% percent. Few and I mean very few players ever make it to the NBA, and the big name basketbal schools like Kentucky, North Carolina, UCLA, Kansas etc have a better average than most schools.

How does one ruin a player?

Cujun you know not of what you ask and I fear you may never learn.

Dale was the best coach LSU had in basketball and built a fine program while fighting the NCAA, and he is still one of the top SEC coaches of all time.

His 80-81 team baring the injuries to Rudy and Hi-C would have won it all, and the refs stole the Indiana game both in 81 and 87.

This is so true, but if Rudy had not had a broke finger, LSU would have won anyway. He missed alot of shots around the basket that were money shots before he broke his finger. Couldn't get the right touch on the ball with his finger wrapped.

Speaking of missing Scales in the tourney, what if we had Nikita Wilson in 86?

My senior year (1981) and I still can't get over Beer Belly Bobby's intimidation of the refs in either of those games. I was in B'ham for the tournament in 1980 staying at my Aunt's and had to watch the game on their TV because the roads were closed by the snowstorm. Had a guy in our crew from the New Orleans Westbank that was 19 and had never seen snow. Still at him out playing in it like a 10 year old.

The 1986 team was the deepest LSU ever and had not both Nikita and Zoran Jovanovich been out by Jan 5th, LSU was a lock for the final four.

Nikita was done in by 1 grade that everyone at LSU was allowed to do the make up work to pass.

Zoran Jovanovich was injuried while at R. Blanton's home over the holidays.

LSU was 11-0 with this starting line up:

C Zoran Jovanovich
PF Nikita Wilson
SF John Williams
OG Don Redden
PG Derrick Taylor

and would win 3 more to go 14-0.

The key bench players was Anthony Wilson, Ricky Blanton, Oliver Brown, Jose Vargas, Bernard Woodside and Neboisha Bukumirovich.

The rest of the team Ocie Conley, Edwin Wilson and Chris Carrier.

LSU would still go on to the final four, but not having Zoran at center hurt, and Nikita would have out classed Pervius.

The 1981 team had its All American player as well, but they had marvelous chemistry. 27 straight wins will probably never happen again. They really were the best team that year.

Awesome year. Remember standing outside in line HOPING to get into the student section of a consistently sold-out PMAC? Remember camping out the night before to get into the Kentucky game?

Those were great times in the Deaf Dome!

Awesome that a few years ago when SI did an "all-time" team NCAA tourney, that LSU and NC made it to the final two. (even though we've never won ONE NCAA)

We should have had Nikita. What if Ice Reynolds doesn't leave early? What if Dale would have been able to lure this guy LINK out of the USSR? In Dale's book, he claims he had him in the bag.

Someone needs to write a book about the strange going owns at the NCAA and why a blind eye was turned on Kansas, Miami, Michigan and Duke at the time.

The Lester case was bad, but the Tito case just shows the NCAA was ok with anything as long as one of it's outspoke critics lost a player.

I think money drives it. The stuff going on in the 80's is probably small time compared to today. I think AAU basketball is a combonation of prostitution and organized slavery. AAU coaches are buying and selling players at the expense of the athlete.

Gary Williams, the former Maryland coach, was very outspoken about this. I believe his last couple of years he would not even deal with AAU coaches. I suspect that Trent Johnson does not want to play ball with these guys, which is hurting his recruting bigtime. We have heard for a few years that there is a rift between Collis Temple and Trent. Why would there be a rift between them?

This is my opinion only, but I'm certain there is lots of truth to it.

I think there are different rules for the media elite and the average school. Ky, Kansas, UNC play by different rules. Calipari and Roy Williams are its worst offenders. Again, only my opinion.

I don't see how you can any team was better than the 81-82 team.

Tito never actually played, Ice and Nikta on the 86 team would have been scary

I remember Jordy came in against Michigan State in 79 and Louisville in 80 and catch fire after the game was decided after going 0-fer when we were still in it.

Also, remember us jumping out to a 5-0 lead against Michigan State behind Rick Mattick, who they couldn't stop inside. Then we got away from him and he got in foul trouble.

No. 79-80 was better. All those guys were a year older. They should have won it all that year... and I know that they would have, if Scales hadn't gotten himself disqualified for agent-talking.

Plus... even though we lost both Greens after 78-79, the 79-80 team had Howard Carter, who had a great freshman year.

Most would say 1981 cause they went to the Final Four. BUT IF they would have had Scales on that team. They win it all.

Rick Mattick quit the team at the end of the 1979 regular season and never participated in the NCAA tournament.

Then Dale would recap his trip to the Mattehorn with pictures. The show came on very late I remember. I'd stay up late watching.

10:30PM Sunday nights, on WBRZ, I used to live for these shows when I was a kid. I was a much bigger LSU basketball fan than football.

You would have to imagine because Shaq and Roberts almost never played at the same time.
