Good day.

I was thinking about next year's RB's and I actually forgot about RB Kaleb Jackson for a second. I saw his HS film, thought he would be a beast.

I saw glimpses his rookie year and thought by year two he would be a beast.

I was 100% wrong and I was hoping someone had some real scoop on why he's not playing.

Is it OC and his playcalling? Kaleb's fault for not picking up 100% of pass protection role? Etc. Something is just off...

2 year career 315 yards rushing, 99 yards receiving, 4 TDs.

Vision and slow first step.

He needs to lose some weight. Put him in the slot on certain downs if he can catch.

His vision isn’t good at all and that is a killer paired with zone blocking. He was really slow and hesitant, but part of that was just not having a feel for finding a crease and getting to it. Durham is just a natural at it and quickly took over the job because of it.

The staff talked about trying to run more gap plays with pulling linemen, but that really didn’t work out and we didn’t use it a ton this season. If we can upgrade the athleticism of the Guards and get better and more consistent play at Center, these plays could be the key to getting more out of Jackson. Sending him to a set spot would take his vision issues out of the equation and hopefully get him running hard downhill, which is what we want from him. We’ll see.

I can see a few lbs but I liked his size and thought he could be our punisher. I'd like to get him on a toss sweep or something similar.

He gets the ball and take one step and hits it hard...getting 4 or 5 yards with an occasional big run.

It seems he only would get a carry in the guard gaps, up the middle...our typical always run up middle on 2nd down BS.

Use some of Fournette plays ...

I'm pretty sure he was in for LSU's last offensive drive in the Texas Bowl. Like others said though lack of vision, a slow first step, and poor blocking.

He runs right into the back of the O-line or a defender. He has no vision

I admit I missed on him also. On paper, the guy should be fantastic. But watching him play, the liabilities are obvious. Two have been mentioned 1) field vision and 2) he is fast but not quick. But the one that hasn't been mentioned is I have never ever seen the guy cut. On a scale of being shifty from 1 to 10, he is a -3. That could be 1) except even past the LOS, he doesn't try to elude anyone. I have compared the guy to the old Dolphins player Larry Czonka....a bull of a runner but wouldn't bet on him winning a tire or cone drill. Agile...he is NOT!

Jacob Hester broke it down earlier in the season. He goes full steam ahead (isn't patient waiting on blocks) and can't go lateral at all.

Edit: I was wrong on him too. I expected him to be our leading rusher this year.

The issue I have with that is Caden Durham has shown to be an accomplished receiver and he is the one back I want to see with the ball in his hand in space. Jackson is the one back I have no confidence in with room to run as he seems to seek contact instead of making the big play.

KJ would benefit from playing in the I or taking pitches. He isn’t an RPO type of back.

Kaleb will do better if our oline can set the edge and run block better. He does need to improve his vision but he’s a good back

" ...He runs right into the back of the O-line or a defender. He has no vision ..."

I ain't Joe Brady but it seems most of those run plays gave Kaleb little chance of success.

Our 2nd down run calls HAVE to improve this year, we run up the middle on 2nd down 99.9 percent of time.

Time is running out for him...come Spring if he's sitting 4th on depth chart, Kaleb will be gone.

We ran more gap scheme this year than I’ve seen at LSU since before 2019.

I’d say the first half of the season we were probably 60/40 gap/zone. We went to more zone in the second half of the season because it was giving us more success, but we still ran a lot of counter & power. In the Alabama game for example we were probably 60/40 zone/gap instead of the other way around.

Jackson didn’t look great in either. On the counter/power runs he seemed to struggle with letting the blocks develop. It’s arguable whether that’s an issue with vision, explosiveness (i.e. overcompensating for not being able to explode through the hole after the blocks develop), general impatience, or execution on the OL. Probably a combination of a bunch of things in reality.

I actually thought he looked better (still not great) on zone calls. He’s not beating people to the edge on a stretch play like Durham, but he can make his cut and run through an LB on an inside zone. Problem is that he didn’t really do anything better than Williams/Durham.

We passed almost 60% of the time on 2nd down this year.
