A few years ago I attended virtually every Fall practice and spring practice leading into both the 2018 and 2019 seasons. I was dumbfounded how little attention was paid to fundamental aspects of the game like baserunning (leads, dirt ball reads), bunting, bunt defenses, double cuts, pickoffs at 2B, 1B/3B offenses and defenses. More emphasis was placed on scrimmaging virtually everyday. Those aspects of the game are important and it was apparent our team wasn’t prepared enough leading into the season. If you watch close, these are things that we still struggle with. All I know is Skip’s teams were prepared beyond belief in all these aspects of the game. If games were close, then LSU had an edge later in games. That is not the case anymore.

They literally do those things for 2 hours before they scrimmage

Yes, if I thought I was playing a running team and I was planning on throwing a lot of balls in the dirt.
But you have to weigh all of your options and decide on your lineup.
If you are going defense in CF, second base and at catcher then you’ve weakened your batting order 33%. Adding a weak link at DH with a weak link batting second adds to the problem.
There's really no lineup we have that would have worked against Vandy. They play a complete brand of baseball and are just, flat out, a lot better than us in every way. I think Mainieri's only hope was to hope all our pitchers pitched their A games and our starters were able to go deep into the game and hopefully scratch across enough runs to win a close game. Obviously that didn't happen because Marceaux threw his worst game of the season and Hill went out in the 2nd or 3rd inning. We had an opportunity to win Saturday, but obviously let that game get away late.
Right now, our good hitters aren't even hitting SEC pitching, so I'm not even sure anyone is good enough at the moment for the lineup to even matter. When only a few guys are serviceable at the plate against SEC pitching and your pitching staff has an ERA nearing 6, that's a recipe for disaster. I think the attitude of the team is a big problem and that falls at the heels of the attitude of their coach.

Did you attend actual practices or just scrimmage portions?

Hopefully a lot of people on this board didn’t play at a high level. Never seen so many soft people in my life. Please don’t fuss at little Johnny, he will get his feelings hurt

Skip was also maybe the best motivator in the history of the sport. We actually weren't great base-runners or even amazing defensively as a team under Skip, but he had those kids believe they were going to win every game. As Skip got older, he wasn't hands on with coaching either, but he knew how to have his kids ready to believe they were going to win every day.

Fine line between coaching players hard and publicly shaming/blaming them. I know the intent in both is to motivate the players. But, the players are not stupid. They see and hear that Paul is clearly not playing his best hitters and instead playing defensive guys...and it's not working. Got to be some sour taste there when he turns around and points a finger at Cade Doughty.

I don't give a shite.....it is incredibly stupid to call out one of your leaders in offensive production because he "can't hit". Exactly how does that help the player or the team.
It's not stupid. It's desperate.
Obviously the intent is to get him to raise his level of play. Status quo isn't working. It's distasteful, but it has been known to work.
Basically, you are having trouble separating distasteful with dumb.

Doughty is hitting .219 in conference. Nothing wrong with challenging him

Again, fussing at Johnny is not the same as telling reporters that Johnny sucks when Johnny has sucked alot less than Joey and Jerry.

Kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't.

You coach your best players the hardest. Ever heard of the saying “if your best players are your hardest workers you have something special “
You call calling out your players in the media for being bad at something "coaching them hard"....

I haven’t heard the interview so I’m not going to judge yet.
But outside of Morgan no one has really had much success. Dugas I guess. Has one or two hits a weekend & it’s a loud one usually

Dugas is hitting .206....Cranford is south of Mendoza...where is their challenge?
A) Calling a player out in the media isn't challenging them in college. If they are in MLB making 20 mil a year that might be a little different.
B) You can't challenge a player without giving them some tools, advice, or coaching to meet that challenge. This seems to be Marinara's approach.
You deserve every bit of what you got with Maineri.

eh, Saban does the same when they lose a game. The problem with Paul is he says the same things after every loss but nothing ever changes after a loss. Coaches who have coached for as long and with as much success as Paul are typically arrogant and stubborn.
I'm far less concerned with what coaches say or don't say in press conferences as I am with what they do off-camera to have the team ready to win the next time out. Basically, what he says has nothing to do with why we're not winning, and if we were winning more no one would care if he called out players after a bad game. I think Paul has gotten to the point where it really doesn't matter what he says. He's losing so whatever he says will be perceived as the wrong thing to say. Winning cures everything, and Paul has possibly gotten to the point where he's not able to do that anymore

I'm going on this quote from the OP
If he mentioned their names specifically I have a problem with that.
If that statement isn't true then obviously it could change things.

I don't recall very often Saban shitting on specific players in his weekly radio show.
I could be wrong but I don't recall it much if at all.

I’m glad those 2 players are mentally tougher than you are
