Greg Maddox got the benefit of a wide strike zone. Not sure how he would fair in today’s game with a lot tighter zone.

The man, the legend. A true artist.

And I hope this Cowan kid comes back. He would be a great tool in Jay's toolkit next year.

Reputation as a corner painter goes a long way in pitching. Maddox is in the HofFame because of that very thing.

I mean, he's not ugly but not exactly the Mona Lisa either.

The movement or lack thereof of the fastball is the difference.

You're not wrong on fastball with movement, but Maddux also threw 4 pitches for strikes (2-seam FB, circle change, curve & cutter) vs. 2 pitches and only 1 consistently for strikes. so, deeper pitch mix, throwing all for strikes, and his location command was impressive. and of course his 2-seam and cutter had movement.

Don Cooper was famous for saying White Sox pitchers were taught:
1. Location
2. Movement
3. Velocity

These days there is way more emphasis on velocity than locating or executing your pitches.

because we just know it’s more effective.

Also pitchers today are fricking disgusting. Go look at the movement they get and how well they tunnel.

the detection and emphasis on spin rate has had quite a bit of influence on this. i think we understand the physics of how the ball travels better than in the 1990s when Maddux played. Ted Williams was onto this concept years ahead of his time.
