Comparison of coaching style Miles vs Saban (not a bash)

I am going to try and explain my frustration (as well as many others on this board) with this head coach without being negative but by comparing his coaching style and philosophy with that of Nick Saban. This is not a “bash” Miles post nor is it a “Saban is better than Miles” post, strictly a comparison of their coaching style. The SNAFU that took place on Saturday was kind of the boiling over point for a lot of us and got me to thinking about why Miles gets so little respect as coach compared to Saban.
Saban demanded and expected perfection from himself, his coaches and his players. We all remember him yelling at players and coaches for mistakes late in the games even though the outcome was already determined. Saban will never be considered a “players coach” but his players respect his ability to coach and teach. Saban stressed the importance of playing hard on every down for 60 minutes. For Saban the process was almost as important as the end result…..meaning…..how did we play, are we improving, are we doing the little things right which leads to doing big things. Now Saban did not win all his games and there were some ugly wins and losses, but for the most part his teams were well prepared and well coached.
Miles, on the other hand, is more of an emotional father figure rather than a technician. Miles is definitely a “players coach” and his players play hard for him because they respect him as an individual. Miles is also an end result guy…..the only thing that matters are W & L’s…….JUST WIN BABY! Miles is loyal……some call that a strength others call it a liability. Miles coached teams don’t always pay attention to the little things and they sometimes seem ill prepared, but they always have talent and play hard. Miles gets the most out of his teams physically but not always mentally. Miles record at LSU speaks for itself. He has some ugly wins and losses, but for the most part his teams play hard and win.
One other quick comparison, Saban always preached the next game is the most important. The reason being he did not want his players looking past an opponent nor did he want them to put more emphasis on any one game. While Miles has never come out and said any one game was more important than another. I get the impression he and the players put a lot more emphasis and emotion into certain games. When that happens and the team loses, it makes it extremely difficult to move forward.
With that being said, both coaches win and have proven track records but they get there in different ways…….which leads to my frustration as a fan. The bottom line is W & L’s and we are PERFECT in that regard, but I’m more of process guy…..are we doing the little things correct…..not always……are we improving (on offense)…..slowly….but the little things are killing us……which leads to my frustration ………but WE ARE WINNING

Saban takes mediocre teams and makes them great.
Miles does the opposite.
The End.
Saban was up by about 3 TDs the other night...and went ballistic over a shanked punt.
He expects.....no...DEMANDS...that the players play the right way with no mistakes..no matter what the score is.
Saban is flat-out ... "miles" ahead of our coach.
frick Little Nicky to hell...but, he is a damn good coach.
You don't have an entire nation mocking him on a regular basis.

Saban: Discipline, structure and order. = unparalled effort, strongest fundamentals, efficiency.
Miles: Unorganized, empathetic, relaxed. = penalties, missed assignments, chaos.
(these are 18-21 year old kids, btw.
Which philosophy yields better production and results?

I totally agree. Very different coaching styles. 180 degrees apart, both can be successful.
Miles coaching style is what could be the problem. He wants to be a coach as well as a buddy. Sometimes you can not always be the players buddy. Sometimes you got to tear some arse when it is appropriate and called for. Sometimes you have to bench starting players when they do not perform; ie JJ for poor play, Barksdale for repeated penalties, Tolliver for dropped passes, Murphy for fumbles and Crowton for being Crowton. Tough love - just like what it takes to be a good father. Miles seems to have a big problem doing this.
When players screw up on the field, Saban meets them at the sidelines and tears that arse up. The players definitely know that they have messed up. Miles on the other hand very seldom, almost never, does this. That is why JJ has made the outrageous statements that he has made about playing well with a 40% completion average and more ints than TD´s. That is probably what he has heard from Miles.
But Sabans team has looked better in virtually every game they have played this year. They dont commit many penalties. They dont have many turnovers. They show continued improvement. And remember that they have many young players , especially on D.
Can anyone say the same about our Tigers? I think we have seen minor improvement but that is all that can be said. Except for our defense, which is lights out and handled by Chavis.
I have no problem with Les being a father figure but he needs to show some tough love to players who are not performing. He owes it to the TEAM. In my opinion, this is one of his biggest issues beside clock management.

Saban yells at his team all the time. Miles, not so much.

Saban can tell time. Miles......not so much.

I agree....Saban's team will always be more consistant than Miles.

Discipline and structure are part of the process that leads to the end result.

Lots of people like to say "oh LSU fans are so spoiled." I don't think we are spoiled - we got used to a certain coaching philosophy and saw the results it produced. The current regime is very different from the previous and we see how that is reflected with the play on the field. I think it boils down to the fact that people enjoyed watching the LSU teams under Saban more than the LSU teams under Miles.

Why all the Saban stuff...........He ain't coming back and most of the names people are throwing around as Miles replacement AIN'T coming either
Posted on 10/5/10 at 10:59 am to jralspanky
It is strictly a comparison of coaching style...everyone knows Saban is not coming back.

Saban also tried a horrible fake punt from his own 30 for no reason.
Or how about trying a fake punt by snapping it to Bradie James on a 4th and 15 in the Cotton Bowl?
Why is Saban infallible to everyone?

Yep. 24-0. Miles would have patted the guy on the back. Not saying there's a wrong or right way, just different styles of coaching.
I have to give Nick Saban credit, he knows how to build a team and win a championship. (Even if he is an arse-hole...lol...)
I think Miles has built a great team this year. With Miles I'm hopeful this year...he's won the NC before. He's certainly got the talent. We'll see.

I think this is a fair comparison. One thing I don't think you stressed enough though, is that Miles is NOT HAPPY with the way we won. Sure, he's glad we get the W, but he knows there are things to be corrected so we don't have to win ugly.
And from what I hear, he gets pretty livid with the players behind closed doors, even though you may not see that out on the field. I think a lot of people would feel differently about him if he went all Bobby Knight/Lou Holtz/Nick Saban on players when they screwed up in games. But that's not his style, and I don't begrudge him for that.

I seem to recall he got mocked pretty good when he bailed from Miami.

Saban is the coach. Miles has to rely on other Coaches such as Chavis to clean up his mess,at 700,000 a yr.Saban you know what his offense will look like and how his defense will look. Miles you never know , he say's he likes 3 yrds and a cloud of dust approach, yet he goes out and hires a spread O coach = He's in over his head.....PERIOD
