He recently put his name in the transfer portal. Word on the street is that he’s transferring to Mississippi State in August.

I looked him up and he was penciled as a backup Center for this fall as a FR. Just curious if there was issues off the field or with coaches or if he just wasn’t a good fit.

My friend saw him play in HS and said he was very very good just would need to put on weight and muscle to play in the trenches in the SEC.

He's just not very good at football.

How was he running 2nd team in the depth charts?

We only have 2 true centers on the roster.

When they transfer it’s because they know they won’t see the field. Duh

We've not recruited OL very well for a few years.

I can't speak to this kid's talent specifically, but if we're giving him a release to another SEC West school, it can mean either of a couple things:

1) He's just a good kid and we don't want to screw him over because it just didn't work here, or

2) We don't feel like he's a threat to contribute at his new school and bite us in the arse later.

I imagine you'd rather 1 vs 2, but given our OL recruiting woes most people on this board are going to lean toward 2.

He was abused all spring, I'm surprised he's trying to stay in the SEC. Figured he'd try a lower level like USM.

Smith was truly just way overpowered. Ika (true freshman) made him his b*tch in the spring game. He's simply not strong/big enough to play SEC football. We knew he needed to get bigger once he came in but in a year's time he made little progress there. Dont pay attention to what Paul Jones said on the MSU 247 board, he's just looking at depth chart and we only had 2 centers last year, hence he was default #2. Watch our spring game and you'll see Smith looked really bad.

We're moving Chasen Hines to center (Ed Ingram on his way back) and if Smith stuck around he would have gotten beaten out easily by him.

Many MSU fans figured he’d go to a MS juco this fall and get some game reps in. That’s not the case.

His dad is a former MSU OL and played a couple years in the NFL. A lot of state fans expected to get Cole out of HS but LSU and O offered first and he committed.

Hopefully a change in scenery does him well.

Chasen Hines is moving to center
Ed Ingram ...Hines ...Kardell Thomas...that's a pretty good interior offensive line in 2020(still need tackles though)

Then persuade him to stay.

Also, bama doesn’t let guys go to other sec schools or dies trying.

Should we adhere to that?

We really need a big name at tackle this year.

I was a big fan of Cole Smith coming out of high school. He played nasty and you always want that in a center but he was just overmatched by true SEC size. He looks to be doing all he can just to be about 285 lbs so he gets eaten up by big 320+ nose tackles. He might very well be a good player for MS State in a rebuilding time but LSU is going for championships and they need big uglies all across the line. Chasen Hines is much stronger and better equipped to handle SEC power.

Amazing as it may seem, we shouldn't be giving scholarships to guys who need to put on weight and muscle to play in the trenches of the SEC.

with this new transfer portal I'm pretty sure a player can transfer to ANY school of his choosing if said school has room. don't think the current coach has a say so in the matter.

Re watched the spring game....the 2nd team scored twice with him at center....

On the plays where #62 disrupted 3 places....only one was play was with #62 on Cole....the other two plays were on the guards...

Later on with Cole against the 1st string defense...he opened a hole for Curry to make a first down...by hitting two DL to free up Curry....

I’m not sure what game you were watching...

The only problem I saw with him was the 4 bad snaps where Brennan had to juggle the ball and throw it too soon....
