I'd worry more about the offense than the D.

Overpopulating the box on defense is not ideal. Ideally you can stop the run without putting 8 in the box.
Chavis knows we will likely HAVE TO in order to stop power rushing teams. This will put a great deal of pressure on our corners.

maybe he's talking about playing to the strength of his personnel.

Our corners will be on an island this year, thank God we have PP and Claiborne, or we would be toast. This is a risky strategy, but i agree with it and hope that it works.

The safeties in Chavis' system can't see the box without binoculars. Don't hold your breath for that to change.

I am worried about the DE's against he run. I think we're gonna get gashed there. I am sure Jefferson and the high octane offense can just outscore people.

if they're coached right, the size won't matter as much

penetrating with run responsibility can lead to great run-stopping on D...like the colts or old tampa teams (and in many 3-4 teams with rush LBs doing just that at smaller sizes)

It can be done, but it takes coaching and a physical freak. There aren't any dwight freeneys on this team.

I am also excited. Now that we have the size, speed, experience and two years under his system, we should be fast, strong and mean. His defenses in the 90's and early 2000's were solid.
His defense started slipping in the last few years to a more " bend but don't brake" after we got better and started keeping our defensive talent from going to play for him at UT. Once that happened he started having to take more chances on guys that were good , but not as good and who had character issues that caused their slide. We used to lose "D" talent yearly to Tenn before Saban and Miles.

Look for great things with this formula.
Since you're looking, you will be rewarded with plenty of it... seeing that the D will be on the field for about 88 plays and 38 minutes per game.

Take your pick.

Often, this is the route taken by championship teams. See Tigers, '03, '07 and Saints '09.

Per Coach Chavis...

I guarantee you we have four or five tackles that can give us the kind of size we need to stop the run."

yes. 2 lockdown corners, or at least 2 very good corners, are essential in winning the SEC. LSU had this in 2003 and 2007 and this is the only other time in the post-90's-era that we have had it. This is a HUGE enabler, as is having 2 strong and beefy DT's and a beefy/leader Mike LB. These 5 players form the framework for an SEC championship-contending D, and Chavis has 6 speed burners in the other 6 slots, giving him exactly the formula he seeks for his defensive approach to thrive.
