I'm liking DC Chavis already. He says he's bringing his SAM strongside LB position to our defense, where he uses safety-sized LB's, including ex-safeties, at the strongside LB position.

The best performing SLB's we've had in recent years were Eric Alexander and Ali Highsmith.

This is good news.

McCray might be best suited for this move. I wasn't impressed with Coleman's play close to the line. He missed a lot of key tackles that ended up going for long gains last year.

Who are some possibilities here?

I was thinking Shomari Clemons, Karnell Hatcher, McCray, and Baker.

Didn't somebody like TCU last year use 7 DB's against spread teams? But I don't know how that turned out. I know all DCs are working and trying to come up with some new scheme to slow down the spread.

from what i remember he just missed that one against Georgia, for the most part the only part of his game i've been impressed with is his ability to make plays down in the box

As long as he doesn't start calling it the "drop LB," I'll be fine.

I am so relieved to hear Fairhope Tiger approves of Chavis and his SAM LB philosophy. We can all sleep with nothing to worry about now.

Exactly, Coleman stands out the most because of his terrible coverage skills. but I see nothing wrong the LB's they have now, Perry and Shepard should go on a tear next season.

Hmmm. what about the more than 50% of the time we aren't playing against the spread? Should we just gear up to stop the spread offenses? How do we gear up to be able to play against both successfully?

I'm also thinking the best defense against the spread is an offense that controls the ball for long time consuming drives that wears out the defense and keeps their offense in really bad field position.

I said Coleman awhile back should be at a LB spot and took all kinds of flack about it. Harry's cousin even chimed in. I just think with his speed, agressiveness, and big-hit ability that he would do well there.

substitute Do you think our personnel is etched in stone and that we can't make changes?

So we're going to call McCray a linebacker so that when he gets beat in coverage, we'll just say it was a b/c the WR was matched up on a linebacker, instead of a sub-par nickelback?

Ok.
