I would imagine that since this storm was projected a cat 4 or even a cat 5 that there are numerous outside power companies already in Louisiana or nearby area waiting to come in and ready to help.

dude BR was absolutely destroyed in some areas
places during katrina lost power for a week or more, and BR didn't get much during katrina
it's a lot worse now

it was rough driving from knoxville to br thursday. it was worse knowing so many fans had to leave. thr fn odasity for the hotels to jsck up rates. We will play sat. every one can do something to help!

4 days? it may take 3 weeks in some areas
Unless the significant majority of Baton Rouge is without power come Friday, I feel very confident that we will play the game Saturday (barring concerns for Hanna, that is). The power crews prioritize the repair work in many ways. Restoring areas/facilities necessary to host the game should likely fall just below hospitals and emergency services; the economic impact of a cancelled or rescheduled game would be severe.

What about people staying in the hotels. Unless they get the all clear to go back home, those of us coming in for the game will not have our hotel rooms to use. Any idea when evacuees will be allowed back home?

quote:It is nowhere near as bad this time because you don't have a million plus people's houses blacked out, destroyed and/or flooded less than 100 miles away. It's all about the priorities. There were areas with no power after Katrina that had full power the next day.

If the hospitals and emergency services can get power restored, then the campus facilities will likely be next and could easily be restored in time. Especially considering how much preparation there was for far more dire outcomes that actually occurred.

I'm betting we don't play on Saturday. First of all, as many will see when the sun comes up on Tuesday, the campus is an absolute mess. There are an estimated 350 trees down on the campus alone. This will take more than the next 3 days to clean up.
Second, campus gets most of its power from Entergy. I'm certain Entergy's priority will not be to restore power to the LSU campus. Many places during Katrina and Andrew were without power for up to two weeks. LSU has already fielded complaints b/c the emergency lights at Tiger Stadium came on and people thought they should be receiving that power.
And the last and most overriding factor is the strain that has already been placed on our local police, fire, and ems personnel. Campus resources are already stretched to the max.
We have a common open date with Troy on November 15. That is when this game will get played. While it may be a good getaway from the storm for some, Baton Rouge will take many months to recover from this storm.

That is the most logical thinking I have heard yet.

I'll bet 50 we don't, school will be closed all week. I live 3 blocks from campus... We got f'ed up here.

I don't think we will play either. Too many companies that supply Tiger Stadium with ice, concessions, etc. don't have power or have employees who have major issues to resolve at home. I think, unfortunately, that LSU will be forced to move the game back to the end of the season. I do think they will wait a couple of days before making an annoucement on this in hopes that power will be quickly restored. B.R. is in almost total darkness after the storm with trees and power lines down everywhere.

Hurricane Gustav swept through Baton Rouge on Monday, killing at least two people, blowing down trees and power lines and carving a path of destruction some officials say is worse than the devastation Hurricane Betsy left in 1965.
“This is the most destruction in East Baton Rouge Parish in anyone’s memory”
==============
LSU’s Pete Maravich Assembly Center and the Field House were full Monday, housing 450 patients and caregivers, said Robin Kistler, a university spokeswoman.
Both shelters lost power, along with the rest of LSU’s campus, said Kristine Calongne, an LSU spokeswoman.
Power was restored to the Field House by Monday afternoon. Power was expected to be restored to between 60 percent and 80 percent of the campus by the end of the day.
Doesn't sound good.

Because trees fell and power was lost.........drama queens
Baton Rouge experienced medium grade WIND DAMAGE, don't sensationalize that crap.
Destroyed is what happened in Houma and Cameron and New Orleans and Biloxi and numerous other Coastal communities in the past. BR will be fine within a few months after some chainsaws and trash trucks pass by!
Destroyed.......Destroyed!
I'm sure the headlines will read "Baton Rouge Pounded" or "Baton Rouge slammed" but honestly Gustav was a bitch slap in keeping it real terms.
I doubt the Tigers play........too much debris and variables to overcome!
