It is immpossible for a football player not to make contact with another player without the head making first contact.........Unless the football player turns his face and inhibits himself from viewing the tackle he has to lead with his head.........the proper technique is to maintain visual with the facemask and helmet making contact with the outside shoulder or, ideally, the football. Do not try to dispute this as I've proven above the NFL and on down teach it this way.
obviously you do not know what "defenseless" means

the penatly is not called leading with the helmet..........ITS CALLED HELMET TO HELMET.
And the NCAA added to this rule any blow directed toward the helmet.

This is tackle football right? How do you hit someone without putting your head down and hitting with your shoulder? BS call. Shouldn't be penalized for making one of the best hits ever. I was in the north end zone and helped that field goal go wide right. Your welcome! Great stick Chad...

you are a douche bag flamer. You are wrong and I wish that chad could demonstrate that hit on you personally.

and Obviously if he doesn't hit the "defenseless" WR it's a catch.
Should he have just tapped him instead since he was "defenselessly" trying to catch the football?
Come on.

I dont make the rules.
you are showing these pictures of tackling, which is fine.
however, none of those ball carriers are in a defenseless position, so naturally the rule doesnt apply. I dont see what is so hard to understand about that.

So how do you tackle someone who has there hands up to make a catch? What is the defender to do? Is he suppose to stick his hands out to make contact first?
You are coached to tackle the way he did it......wrapping up as you so eloquently pointed out would have finished the play.......but he didn't his momentum wrapped him up for him........
I don't understand how a defender can approach a WR trying to catch a football without doing what Chad did.........sorry dude.

He did blow that fricker up though!!! This year all in NCAA big hits like that are getting called. I wish they'd let them play if it has an impact on if the ball is caught. Late hits or early ones are not called for at all.

I didnt write the rule.
You obviously can do just about anything else.
A)make a play on the ball
b)lead with your shoulder
c)hit him in his torso
d)try and jar the ball loose as he catches it
i dont know if u are being a smartass, its not that hard to understand

to properly lead with your shoulder you must turn your body sideways in a way that your head doesnt come first
people do it all the time. You lead with your shoulder and launch yourself and it has the same affect, with no penalty
Posted on 11/29/09 at 12:51 am to Lester Earl
are you being purposefully obtuse? The head is connected to the shoulders. Helmets make contact incidentally on most every tackle. Chad Jones hit the man in the shoulder with his shoulder. Go back and watch an HD replay. The only reason the guys helmet cam off at all is because he didn't snap his chin strap on.

Nah usually the effect is a missed tackle and the player bouncing off.....because for one to lead with the shoulder from that approach you lose valuable velocity and momentum upon contact........
How bout this, you enjoy the rulebook and I will enjoy a great football play..........night.
