Caught that at the beginning of CBK’s post spring game comments.

Can the more enlightened of you please explain how we are thin on the OL after being thin on the OL last year and needing to play 2 true freshmen?!? I thought OL was going to be a position of strength this year given that they’ve had a season to play together and get used to each other and the playbook. What happened that we needed to move 2 linemen from defense to offense?!?. If i remember correctly our OL last year was so putrid and that’s why we had to play JD5 bc of how quickly the line broke down. How are we still thin? Wth happened?!?

Depth pieces that left weren’t good enough
Chester and heard will provide depth immediately
The transfer from Maryland will push to start

Assuming no injuries, it absolutely should be.

What happened

Bradford declared somewhat unexpectedly (it was the late timing more than anything), but more importantly, we had a bunch of upper classmen who had been passed by younger guys and were never gonna play that hit the portal.

I don’t think any of this surprised Kelly and staff, though. We have some freshmen coming in, some guys who missed spring due to injury, and we’ll probably add a couple of transfers from the portal after the spring. I think they went after the top couple of guys previously, but with our top 6 guys coming back and adding Heard, those guys went places they knew they’d start immediately. We’ll probably add some younger guys for depth who have 2-3 years of eligibility left and aren’t looking to definitely start year 1.

BK likes to go three deep on the oline so if we are two deep with studs we are still thin

Starting oline is a position of strength. We do need some of the 5 freshmen we have to contribute to solve depth issues. What’s hard to understand here? If big Lance can come in like Jones and Cambell did last year is probably the big question mark. That and the center position.

I'm almost certain his definition of "thin" pertaining to the Oline is very different from Ed O's definition

Do you understand what “thin” means?? It doesn’t mean that our first team O-line won’t be talented and good. It means that we don’t have much experienced depth behind it.

I don't think we're in trouble on the line.

That said, I'm not surprised he's saying we're thin.

Just look at where we are...

50 Emery Jones Jr. 6-6 325 Sophomore 1L Baton Rouge, La. Catholic HS
55 Kimo Makane'ole 6-4 310 Redshirt Sophomore SQ Niceville, Fla. Niceville HS
64 Wes Woodward 6-1 275 Redshirt Freshman RS Baton Rouge, La. Catholic HS
65 Kobe Roberts 6-5 250 Redshirt Junior TR Buford, Ga. Mill Creek HS
66 Will Campbell 6-6 325 Sophomore 1L Monroe, La. Neville HS
67 Bo Bordelon 6-6 295 Redshirt Freshman RS Raceland, La. Isidore Newman School
69 Charles Turner III 6-4 295 5th-year Senior 3L Canton, Ohio IMG Academy
70 Miles Frazier 6-5 325 Redshirt Junior 1L Camden, N.J. Milford Academy Florida International
72 Garrett Dellinger 6-5 320 Junior 2L Clarkston, Mich. Clarkston HS
73 Jack McDevitt 6-5 275 Sophomore SQ Fort Lauderdale, Fla. St. Thomas Aquinas HS
77 Marlon Martinez 6-5 330 Senior 3L Fort Lauderdale, Fla. St. Thomas Aquinas HS
-- Tyree Adams 6-6 282 Freshman HS Marrero, La. St. Augustine HS
-- DJ Chester 6-4 315 Freshman HS Conyers, Ga. Eagle's Landing Christian Academy
-- Lance Heard 6-6 308 Freshman HS Monroe, La. Neville HS
-- Mason Lunsford 6-7 305 Junior TR Olney, Md. Our Lady of Good Counsel HS Maryland
-- Paul Mubenga 6-4 291 Freshman HS Buford, Ga. Buford HS

That's 16 roster offensive linemen total, of whom three are walkons. So you're really only looking at 13 scholarship offensive linemen.

13 isn't enough. You really want three strings of scholarship linemen.

I don't know how many are in the portal who could help us. It would be worthwhile if we could find two to grab them.

Assuming no further attrition, come fall camp LSU will have 13 scholarship Offensive lineman. In the 2023 class LSU signed 4 OLmen, none of them are presently on campus and out of the transfer portal LSU signed one player who will not be on campus until this summer. 13 - 5 = 8. Charles Turner was out for the spring camp with injury. 8 - 1 = 7.

So, basically a starting 5 with 2 back-ups for spring football, so yes thin on scholarship OLmen for the spring. Many walk-ons had to cover the other 8 spots in a three deep.

Moving two from DL for the spring helped alleviate this issue.
