The fact that your returning senior starter is losing first team snaps to a freshman, and the fact that it sounds like neither will get redshirted, points to the coaches not being that happy with their senior qb.

Exactly how I read it as well. Minimal confidence in him.

No he said Coach O would pick "when" a QB was chosen. That tells me he is leaving the overall decision to Canada.

Has no one ever been in charge of people or worked for a boss that was a leader? The reason, IMO, that he states O will make the call is because O is the boss, and will ultimately bear the responsibility for the actions of asst coaches, team and personnel. I am sure that O has instructed them to say this. Do you think Canada is a puss and wouldn't tell O who should be the starter?

ETA: I mean "you" in a rhetorical sense.

Good lord, you guys are interpreting pauses now! Starting to sound like the political media. What brand of clothes were their wife's wearing or perhaps their kids. What does it mean? LSU has four QB's. The coaches know more about them than the fans. They will trot out the best one and perhaps play a couple of others and the fans can then at least make a judgment on their respective abilities.

You guys will come to love coach Canada. He took Pitt' s two and three star kids and made them a scoring machine. I can't wait to see what he does with those SEC studs you guys land routinely. He's going to give a certain gentleman in Alabama fits. If you boys have a D the next few years your O will sparkle. Promise.
Enjoy.

Where do you believe O will get his information to make an informed decision?

Yes. A head coach who doesn't make that call is an idiot. Can you imagine, two days before the national championship game, the offensive coordinator suddenly announces to the press that the backup QB will be the starter? Do you think a head coach would allow that? Any head coach?

He did say a couple of times that the qb starter would be named by Coach O. He had positive things to say about each of them, but I guess his muted comment would be "after I tell him who it will be"

Yeah, I think we should put this "issue" to rest. Canada, O and likely Ensminger are going to sit down and discuss who and when the starter will be announced. O is going to lean on Canada's assessment and recommendation for the decision.

I would imagine there has been a discussion among the coaches that they will speak with "one voice" (insert Cajun voice joke here) and most likely the big announcements will come from O. I'm speculating, but I would imagine that Canada and Aranda are cool with this because he's publicly and probably privately allowed his coaches to do their job and has been open in support and praise for their work. I imagine that kind of management garners O a certain level of respect and loyalty.

When have a coach's comments ever translated to how good they were on the field? It's all coach speak.

I'm not talking about making the actual announcement. I'm talking about O making the final decision even if Canada and O disagree on who should start. I'm not saying that is the case , just curious to know if any of you would trust O making that call.

Canada is saying exactly what I would expect. Any more than that will be a media frenzy and a big distraction between him and his players.

I'm not interpreting pauses, or really the statements he made yesterday.

In general, we have a returning senior starter. You'd expect him to be the starter this year no questions. When Mettenberger returned for his senior year, he was the QB, no questions about it. Jennings did not challenge him at any point, or take snaps away from him.

We have two freshman right now taking snaps away from Etling, and coaches have talked about both of them possibly playing this year. That shouldn't happen when you have a senior QB worth a shite, like Mettenberger. They had every intention of reshirting Jennings that year b/c that's what normally happens when you have a returning senior qb, unless the freshman that takes snaps away from the returning senior QB is Tim Tebow.

My point is the fact that the two freshman expect to play this year, and have been talked about a lot this offseason, says a lot about what the coaches think of Etling. Freshamn QB dont' normally play when there is a senior QB that started as a junior, unless that senior QB isn't that good.

Grayson Lambert started as a junior for UGA. Wasn't that good. Goes into his senior year and loses out to freshman Jacob Eason. If Grayson Lambert was Aaron Murray, he doesn't lose his job.

Grayson Lamberts Junior year:
1959 Yards
63.3% completion
12 TDs 2 Ints
11 sacks
141.5 QB Rating

Danny Etling Junior year:
2123 Yards
59.5% completion
11 TDs 5 Ints
17 sacks
135.5 QB Rating

Both played with all time best type running backs. Both go into their senior year with a new coach. Both go into their senior year with highly touted freshman qb.
Lambert started the season opener and lost his job by the end of that game.

I feel like your question is loaded and leans towards trashing O. But perhaps, your question is unbiased, so to answer, yes, I trust the O of today to make the call and stand behind he and his asst's decisions.

How is he being generous? Etling finished rated between 5-7 among 14 SEC QBs depending on the statistical category you are assessing.

That looks capable, but average to me.

Doesn't it seem that Canada has given less than a ringing endorsement to any of the QB's when you read his comments? He doesn't criticize any of them really, but the comments are pretty subdued. I'm not suggesting there's any reason to be overly- concerned, but I do find it interesting.

Doesn't mean a thing. Could mean he will let the hard work and result speak for themselves. Better than a Jeremy Johnson scenario at Auburn, where everyone's expectations were raised, and people are expecting him to light the world on fire, and he fell far below those expectations.
