quote:They also had to go double OT to beat Mississippi College in the exhibition opener and followed that up by beating William Carey (but WCU stayed within single digits for a large portion of the second half). So there's that.
Southern Miss needed double OT to beat Tougaloo, an NAIA school, in their season opener. That's all you need to know.

Good. It's not that Im not excited about this team, cause the pieces I saw in the opener have me excited that we can play great basketball this season.
The great thing about our second half of the first game was that it all happened with Blakeney struggling bad. He forced up 5 threes cause he just felt out of the game, and for the most part he was.
I thought Jones did a good job subbing guys in and out of the game and felt that we looked very fresh running quickly as the game went on.

So insanely frustrating. It's the definition of forcing it. I mean, I just don't get it

Blakenely will start draining those shots soon, he's just a streaky shooter . I really like the way he attacks the rim . He should definitely do that more instead of firing up so many 3 point attempts . He capable of putting up 30-40 points on any given night , it's always nice to have someone like that .
I really think epps could be the difference maker on this team. He's got a beautiful 3 point stroke and can run very well. Hopefully he can tighten up on defense but hes kind of an odd ball size . He needs to put on some weight .

Epps and Sampson should alternate at the three based on matchups with the opponent.
Epps can basically play 3, 4 or 5, so he can have a big role this year.
Starting lineup should end up:
Mays
Blakeney
Sampson
Victor
Reath
Then:
Epps
Patterson
Sims
Hayward
Not sure about Jenkins until he comes back from injury.
I don't see anyone else getting much playing time.

How long is Jenkins out? What is his injury?

I mean technically yeah. But if he is having to play the 5 we are in deep shite. He got backed down and worked in the low post last game.

One thing I really liked about Saturday's game was how animated Jones was on the sideline. He wasn't standing like a dead fish with his hands on his hips like last season. Looked more like the 2013-2014 JJ.

We have some good pieces. I really like our backcourt and I think we'll be better than 12th in the league and could sneak in the NIT, IF Reath proves to be competent as both a 2nd option for when Victor has to sit for 15 minutes with 2 fouls and as a rim protector. Unfortunately, we still will have no semblance of a halfcourt offense and will get eaten alive by any team that can control the tempo or run a halfway functional zone d. Additionally, we will (unless Jenkins is the next Garret Temple or better) continue to play atrocious perimeter d, which goes back to our needing Reath to be competent as a rim protector. Other than that, should be a fun year.

If we can win games by 22 with Tone and BSamp shooting 5-19 we might be pretty good. A lot of people are talking about what will happen when we get Craig back but I'm more interested to see how Branden Jenkins does. He, not Duop, was Lee College's leading scorer last year. Kids an elite finisher and will be our best on ball defender. We really need what he brings.

They found some knee problems he had previously that were undetected and had surgery. Don't know the prognosis.

here you go. We are going to blow a chance to get into the tournament. Is there anything new?

Starting lineup
Mays – Pretty decent player. He is an improvement from last year’s starting point guard. His length will cause problems from some of the smaller guards in conference. Also, he can shoot the ball which is an added bonus.
Blakeney – His shots of recent has been spotty however, give him some time, he will be one of the top scores in the SEC. I’m not worried about him.
Sampson - Streaky shooter with limited offensive moves. His lackluster defense is the reason why I am advocating for Epps to start for a lineup of the following:
PG Mays 6-4
SG Blakeney 6-4
WF Epps 6-10
SF Victor 6-9
SF Reath 6-10
Reath – Best pro prospect on the team. Can back off and shoot the three as well as drive to the basket. His defense is adequate and is a decent passer for a big man.
Victor- Effective but not pretty. Can rebound around the basket and score from 10 ft in. I look for Victor to average 11 to 13 points this year.
Bench:
Epps - Much improved on both his offensive and defensive game. I would love to see him start along with Reath, and Victor for an imposing front line. He can definitely stroke it from the outside when hot.
Patterson –Steady, heady player whom will average 6 to 8 points a game. Perhaps on a good night can get you 16 to 18 points.
Sims – Will make a mark this year. Young Sims will be an added offensive threat. Due to his size, he will be a liability to the SF position however, he will make that up with quickness, tenacity and hustle. In my opinion, he will be one of the first players off the bench to interject scoring and will average 8 to 10 points a game this season. He is much more of a scoring threat than Brian Bridgewater. His game is similar to his father however, young Sims is a better offensive threat.
Hayward- Can shot the ball however, his defensive skills are somewhat lacking. This kid is definitely from Australia because, he can hop out of the gym. Lol! He shoots and handle the ball as if he came out of a New York City bough. In summation, he reminds me of White Chocolate (Jason Williams).
Final prediction 21-9

I worked with Antonio Blakeney during the offseason, he kept reassuring me they were going to be MUCH beter this year.
When Victor III comes back, and Blakeney shoots higher than 20% (bad first game), we'll be damn good.

It may be a bit of a stretch, but Reath definitely has a nice looking shot. He is a stretch 5 (international big guy). Love his skill set.
At one point this past game he took the ball from the top of the three point line, drove in (dribbling with his left hand), made the layup and got fouled. Finished off making the free throw.
Was as impressive of a move as I've seen by a big guy.

He did in JUCO. He's not going to be asked to do that now (nor should he)
