Can someone give the history of TGBFTL and "Neck?"
Posted by linewar

As a kid going to games in the 80's, I don't remember ever hearing the song, then as a young adult in the mid-2000's I can remember hearing it at games, but without the STTDB shout - it seems like that came about sometime in the early-to-mid-2010's. Living out of state now, I'm only an occasional (once-a-year) attender at games and, of course, now they don't play Neck at all.
Can someone give the [unauthorized] definitive history on TGBFTL and Neck?

I think the first time the TGBFTL played it was in 2010. I don't think it took long for the students to ad-lib on to it and the band stopped playing it regularly.
CORRECTION: It started around 2007 (maybe 2006). Obviously, I got my dates wrong. For some reason, I don't recall the STTDB being so prominent until 2010-ish though.

Basically they got the song from Southern sometime during the mid to late aughts. The original song, the singing part is “talking out the side of your neck”. And I do remember when they first started playing it… it was pretty killer. The hand thing, the whole stadium would be doing it. It was just a breath fresh air.
Sometime between Les’ BCS title and around 2011 it got perverted by the students to STTDB. The rest is history. For a minute they tried to convince the students to stop chanting that and would try playing it but as soon as the chant would start they’d have to stop the song.
In the present day, there are a few other songs the band plays that the students will do the chant over but the band doesn’t actually play the original “neck” song anymore.

Longtime HBCU band standard, written by Larry Blackmon and performed by Cameo. Same group that did “Word Up”
The song was originally on the bands, “She’s Strange” album that would have come out around 1983

That’s what I was thinking too. It was definitely around before 2010.
There was a time when it was just “talking out the side of your neck”. I think there was a YouTube video or something around 08-09 where they recorded the student section & on the video it “sounded” like students were saying STTDB, even though majority were still doing it correctly with neck.
Once that got out, more & more people started actually saying it and by 2011 it was the whole student section.

It was a combination of the band playing Neck and the up & down hand motion simulating a sex act. The STTDB was added to it pretty quickly.
If memory serves there was a video of LSU playing AT Ole Miss where the band and traveling fans were doing it (right before Trindon Holiday returned a kick off or punt for a TD - he was doing the “up & down” motion on the field too). That wasn’t the first time we did it, but it was within a year or two of when it all started.

It was well before that.. hell they basically stopped playing it by like 2013. There’s no chance it was only getting played for 3-4 years.

I was a student in 2013, and LSU was planning to bring Neck back for a game, I think it was Furman. They had a whole campaign about "keeping it clean." Then they played Neck, and the students said STTDB, and it's gone.

RIP Tiger Rag and traditional pregame lineup. I blame Linda Morehouse.

You are right. I had a senior moment. I was getting the timeline confused. I think 2010 was when STTDB became easy to distinguish while watching the games on tv.
