Maybe a reason House played them off so much

Even if they could have played man last night, it’s going to be tough against SEC teams.

They’re going to have to learn to play zone one way or another.

I think So, a few times they did and looked fine.

3rd down scheme makes
No sense.

We bring 4 but then we give 20 yards of cushion like we brought the house.

House’s base defense is a Cover 3 zone. That’s been his system his entire career, so we are going to play mostly zone this year and man will be situational, which is pretty much the opposite of what we are used to.

Based on last night, it’s going to take a while for that transition since our players aren’t as familiar with zone. But House did just fine with it a UK, so it can work in the SEC.

Garner made some solid plays but lack of speed was evident. Likely better matchup up against jump ball WRs.

Bernard-Converse seemed decent.

But neither seemed like an elite corner imo.

The losses of Ricks and McGlothern were big as I don’t know if we have a blue chip outside corner right now.

Maybe Latterance Welch can be that guy?

LBs and the middle zone safeties were getting lit up. The boundary corners did fine playing third zone match. I would have liked to see House play cover 1 rat or spy instead but that’s just me.

They played zone. They just forgot to cover the receiver that came into the zone.

Yeah, and I would add that it’s really what you need to do when your CBs are physically outmatched. We aren’t used to seeing it because we normally have at least one first round pick at CB.

The execution wasn’t good last night, but I think it’s the right scheme for this team. If we had Greedy and Stingley back there I’d probably feel differently.

Because he was so good recruiting, coaching and keeping guys on the field the previous two seasons, right?

Yeah that was my point. Long term the answer isn’t to start running man, it’s to get better at running zone.

At some point last night they should’ve realized that FSU was going to keep eating them alive with crossers and switched to man. Cover 1 rat would’ve easily shut that down

I don’t think they could do it on a consistent basis. They need to it some to mix things up and bring extra pressure sometimes because constantly dropping into zone on third down and giving up 11/15 on third downs will most likely get you beat every time.

It that oh wait he didn’t do that for the last like 3 seasons before he left?

Our secondary even had issues for most of 2019

We just don't have the coverage talent we are used to in the back 7 to run lockdown man. Then House's base defense is zone which players now a days don't get taught much as they are growing up.

There is hope, but it's going to take more time for these players to learn to play zone effectively. You have to defend the guy when he enters your zone and be confident your teammates will also pick up the player when he enters their zone. Lsu wasn't good at it in the middle of the field last night.

I hope House can develop a good defense, but I never remember LSU having much success when they run 75% zone coverage. Ed O didn't get things turned around last year until he went back to man coverage, but we don't have Rick's or McGlothran back there anymore.
