I watched him play 1B for Canes National with my own eyes.

At a showcase. He did not play 1B in high school baseball. Well, if you can believe what he says. But we know you know better than Mason Braun what Mason Braun did.

If youve been paying attention, Serna didn't play 1B in HS either yet they tried it out a couple weeks back.

With that exit velo he showed yesterday at the plate, I think he might be closer to a current version of Hayden Travinski than Milazzo.

Nvm, answered in this thread. Braun can't play 1st.

That sucks because I love Yamin at C

Nice. Well the videos of them trying to show him how to cover the bag before his first start looked like the first time I tried to ride a bike

I say give Yamin a shot at first base in the mid week

We need a better defensive catcher. Period.

Put him at catcher and see if that level of performance continues. Figure out the other positions after that. Bide DH, Serna 1st, who knows. Rotate Braun in for DH. I don't know.

But I do know if we don't get better defensive play from our catcher, it's going to cost us more games.

He did yesterday. And he’s got to keep him out for a while. He’s all in his head. I’ve been defending his playing because he was getting on base and playing a decent 1st Base. But he’s not even getting on base now.

I was listen to Hunt earlier, and I think he’s hitting .145 with zero extra base hits in SEC play. And his walks have gone down, so they don’t make up for his lack of production. And he’s taking his offense into the field now. A 1B shouldn’t have 5 errors in an entire season, much less through only 4 weeks of SEC play.

But back to the OP, I was thrilled that Yamin caught a good game. And that Jay trusted him too. None of the announcers were talking about it, but I thought we were about to move Arrambide to catcher, which would have removed our DH. So Jay would have had to change pitchers every time their spot in the order came up for a pinch hitter. Maybe he’d have let Guidry swing it, but it would have completely changed how he handled the pitching staff.

I think he could be another Ethan Frye. Overlooked & underestimated until he started showing what he could do.

I want Yamin to play more but Yamin and Frey are in two different categories.

Frey was always an MLB prospect that was stuck on a loaded college roster and is currently a top 3 prospect within the Astros organization. The only reason he didn’t play more at LSU was that he was hurt pretty much his entire sophomore year.

I honestly think even it comes to catching pitchers, right now, Yamin might the best we have.

Most people on here miss that important point on managing pitchers and just look at batting or passed balls. The thing I thought Milazzo did exceptionally well was frame pitches on the catch.

There were always higher rated, higher touted catchers than Milazzo

I thought Milazzo was pretty highly thought of pre-college, at least defensively

Just put an athletic infielder at FB that can’t field and can catch balls thrown to him. Hitting is optional. We just can’t afford errors.
