247:Notes from LSU football third spring practice of 2023

quote:

-In terms of unexpected injuries who weren’t on the field, offensive lineman Miles Frazier and defensive lineman Bryce Langston were not out there. Really only six true offensive linemen working today.

quote:

-As part of the initial defensive front four drills, Ovie Oghoufo, Paris Shand, Jacobian Guillory and Sai’vion Jones were the first group to line up together. The Tigers are without interior linemen Maason Smith and Mekhi Wingo for the spring as far as contact work is concerned so there’s opportunity for guys like Shand and Guillory to make their marks this spring with a solid showing.

-Maason Smith, Mason Taylor, Dashawn Womack, Matthew Langlois, Armoni Goodwin all working on the back field, running and doing other non-contact conditioning exercises. They were in helmets and jerseys but not in pads. It’s expected that all will miss most if not all of the spring from a contact perspective but was still good to see them on the field.

I expect Maason "bricklayer" Smith to be unblockable this year! Dude is a junior basically, experienced veteran player that should be superstrong and just clark kent like. Lol I expect him to be up for all of the DL awards this upcoming season and be an all american. The Collins kid could surprise at QB! But to hear that 9 guys are running that fast is very optimistic. Not use to seeing notes on here like this from the head coach, but Kelly is that kind of guy! Geaux Tigers!

The answer on special teams was disappointing. No mention of improving return coverage, which was repeatedly disappointing in ‘22. Instead, we get “we like our scheme” and comments about drops on returns.

Nice to see Nabors becoming a leader and possibly a captain. Sick of the divas we’ve had receivers for the past years

How is that even relevant, given what he said. Basically he said last year was fine except for individual performances. Special Teams problems went well beyond dropped balls and missed kicks. Defending punt returns and kickoff returns, allowing for blocked field goals and extra points is a scheme issue. Not coaching up players on relevant rules is a coaching issue. These things weren’t just one-off exceptions. They happened all season with no improvement over time.

We get Harold Perkins for another 26-30 games.
Enough time to become a LEGEND.
