Meh, no big loss imo... We'll have better players for his position next year anyways honestly, I have faith in WW to find someone to fill that scholarship well

Absolutely nothing against Sampson IMO don't think he's ready but... guess that opens another spot for a Juco player.

I don't know why someone would have something against Brandon Sampson. He was injured most of this year, but when was healthy was a good contributor.

It's interesting a TQ thread from a few weeks ago got positive traction when TQ was less of a program player than Sampson.

I'd like him back if it fits the program and Brandon. But if not, I only wish him the best.

Well, people will be angry because this is a systemic problem in all LSU sports. There is ZERO reason Brandon Sampson should go Pro. He's a role player. I want him back because when he's hot, he can score 20 and he's athletic as Hell. He is entirely too inconsistent to sniff the NBA, I would be shocked if he even contributes in the G League until a few years from now.

If a guy like Sampson comes back, if just gives you that much more depth. You have guards of Waters, Edwards, Smart, Sampson, Mays...that is perhaps one of the best 5 guard rotation in the country. Programs like Kentucky and Duke can't even really go 5-deep because of the attrition. Hell, most the year Duke only went 7-8 deep, same with Virginia. It's just a shame that Sampson would rather bolt as soon as possible than try and compete for a program changing year.

All my opinion.

Agreed on all counts. Seems like we have had a few guys make a bad decision to go pro early. If Blakeney had stayed this year and been able to do what he did in the g league under wade he would have been a top 10 draft pick. As it is he does 10 day contracts every now and then. I beleive Sampson would be an even worse decision unless he is ready to play over seas right now. A healthy year under Wade help him a lot imo.

I was afraid of that . He’s been a bit of a malcontent since the injury. At practice he drove the stafff crazy being so lazy away from the ball. He never grasped the movement Wade demands in his sets. He could def play overseas with his skill set.

I agree with a lot of what you said. But it really depends on a persons financial situation and their educational goals.

I don't know what he thinks, but just in general for a player that is marginal skill level and not bought into school... if he can make $80k-$250k+ for 4-5 years bouncing around, we're capitalists, don't see how that bothers people. It might be the most per year he makes in his lifetime and use as fuel for rest of life.

In the G league, $20k a year is standard. Of course, two way contracts up the salary. In Europe, yes, some bigger money can be made, but the player must be a high performance asset.

I don't think Brandon Sampson is very close to being a high performance asset in the G league or Euro league.

Brandon's upside has not been displayed nearly as much Tim Quarterman's was in college. Quarterman did show a few flashes of brilliance during his stay at LSU. Brandon has not come close to showing that.

And Brandon is not even close to the same level as Antonio Blakeney, who was just named G league rookie of the year. And, being rookie of the year doesn't automatically mean the player is moving up permanently to the NBA.

So, Brandon has great examples from former LSU players to guide him.

Wish him the best because he will need it.

Well, he was in the Apple Store at the Mall of Louisiana on Wednesday so I guess he’s expanded his skills to include Teleportation.

We as a community and culture need to start recognizing the factual financials. I'm guilty of it too, as we say "Oh, he'll go to Europe and make 150k."

Players in the G League make either $19,500 or $25,000 (No idea why those numbers are so specific, but there is an SI article about it). Going to play in the G League is not a glamorous gig unless you realllllly have a chance as a two-way player or sign some 10-day contracts. Also, the G League is VERY offensive, some of those scores are like 130-125 on a regular basis. Averaging 15 points isn't even that big of a deal. I just really don't know if Sampson has developed enough of the mental game to make it.

As for overseas, I believe Sampson could land in a mid-tier league. Something where it is a mix of lesser known College players, old vets, and players from that country. I would be willing to bet Sampson would make about 60-70k a year overseas...but is that worth it when you've been born and bred in Baton Rouge and have barely ever left it? Tough thing to do.

Again, all my thoughts...I just think taking a chance growing as a player, getting an education, and improving your skillset is very valuable to a young man's life.
