In the 46th minute of Ryen Russillo’s latest podcast (#122 - College Recruiting Stories), Boog says, “...later on I came to know that Gerry DiNardo is a piece of shite, but that’s beside the point.”

Yes, Boog’s answer was he was a crummy fit and didn’t know how to treat other people like southerns expect to be treated, etc. Was hoping for more juice and specifics, but didn’t get them.

Yes, actually. An interviewer less knowledgeable on cfb would've just let Booger's statement sit with no follow up. Said Gerry was from the north and more business like and not caring like people from the south and didn't fit in in BR. He was obviously holding back something cause you wouldn't call him a pos 20 years later if he was just not friendly enough.

If I had Lou Tepper as my defensive coordinator I would call him that too.

Booger is full of shite. Seems like a coach named Nick has fit in just fine at LSU and Alabama.

I think West Virginians fit the mold of a southerner more than someone from Queens, wouldn’t you?

I think something happened but he wanted to dance around it. He mentioned how Gerry was Italian from the North as a negative twice which I thought was odd. At least from the outside that didn't seem to be the problem.

That's pretty lame on Booger.

Dinardo turned out to be a piece of shite because he thought Lou Tepper was a good football coach.

Perhaps the avg West Virginian, but Nick acts as Yankee as they come. Nick also wins wherever he goes.... in college

Near Ohio Border, Ancestors from the Balkans (Catholic) and Strong Union-Democrat, not the popular political affiliation in the South and not the common religion affiliation of most of the South, save South Louisiana. He is good friends with the Senator from WV, Joe Manchin and has donated money to Senator Manchin. They grew up together.

DiNardo, Notre Dame Grad, for lots of LSU fans not good, NYC and ancestors Italian (Catholic). So probably culturally for some people, the NYC brashness is not something rural Southerners, White/Black, whatever, found as a fit.

Saban's brilliance was he was a Psychology major and he new how to relate to people and sell a program and had the NFL bonafides on his resume.

When Saban was first hired, the "fit" issue was raised here by many in the LSU community the same way it was with Dinardo.

Dinardo did well in the Catholic league in New Orleans, his Notre Dame resume helped him there but he was brash which is not uncommon of anyone from NYC, just kind of is part of the NYC culture and a player from rural LA like Booger and his family might not have liked DiNardo's style.

Calling him a POS, over the top, but I understand where he is coming from and I say that as someone who shares the same ethnic and religious affiliation as DiNardo, although not from NYC!

Well, West Virginia fought with and sided with the Union Army. But you got me. Nick is southern as any good ole boy.

That's just because WV is shitty and hick. His hometown is further north than Baltimore, DC, and Atlantic City.

Nothing Southern about Nick Saban, his ancestry is Croatian, most people in the South from traditional Scotch/English/Welsh ancestry probably never meet someone from that ethnic background, Areas in New Orleans had significant immigration from people from the Balkans that settled in New Orleans metro area. As you note, WV fought with the Union. His Friend Senator Manchin is of Czek/Italian ancestry. Those communities that Saban and Manchin grew up in were very, very, very Strong Union Worker areas and Trump because of his tarriffs on Steel and trade issues with China and lifting restrictions on Coal. Michael Dukakis arguebably the most Liberal candidate the DEMS have run in the Post WW2 era carried WV, as did Bill Clinton twice (he carried LA twice), but with the globalization and anti-coal stance of the modern DEMS, WV the last 4 elections in presidential politics has gone Republican. Carter carried it vs. Reagan in 80, Reagan cam back and carried it in 84 vs. Mondale. In all 3 elections of the 60's, WV was carried by the DEMS (JFK, LBJ and Humphrey). Nixon carried it in 72, Carter (DEM) got it in 76. So last 15 Presidential elections, 8 DEM / 7 REP.

Over that same period from 1960 to today, 60 combined yeas * 2 Senators = 120 total, 114 DEM / 6 Republican.

WV is as redneckish as it gets. There’s a difference.
