The est way to do this is probably to give each sporting achievment a weight and figure it all up.

i.e.

Football BCS Championship 20
Basketball National Championship 19
SEC Football Champs 18
BCS Bowl appearance 17
SEC Basketball Championship 16
CWS Champs 15
Final 4 appearance 14
CWS appearance 13
etc...

I don't think he meant which athletic program is "popularly" the best of the decade.

Good point. Don't be swayed by popularity of the sports. Just the quality of the overall programs from top to bottom.

you've taken a poll? Alot of people could care less about basketball until the tournament.

You've got to be kidding me. Look no further than Sportscenter to gauge the popularity between the two. College baseball barely gets airtime on SportsCenter during the CWS. College basketball gets significant airtime starting on the FIRST day of their season. I won't even tough the ratings issue because they aren't even close to being on the same level. From a national perspective, winning a national title in basketball carries a lot more credence than winning a national title in baseball, hockey, or lacrosse.

What does it matter which is more popular? Its about the program being the best not the popular sports being the best.

again, the question didn't ask what program is the most popular.

Do you not comprehend that its not a popularity contest?

And why do you think Sportscenter is the deciding authority?
I could care less what they show on highlights.....make a solid point instead of revolting to popularity contests.

Florida is not only the top program of the SEC this decade, they are the top program nationally. LSU is solidly second in the SEC and may be second nationally. Texas is right there. There are some others but I like the Tigers for #2. Been a great decade.

Alright, so who is going to decide this debate? If you are asking a national panel of "experts", who would get the nod?

so if this were nationally, you'd say stanford has a better athletic program than lsu because they win rowing, swimming and water polo titles and lsu just wins football and baseball?

Wait, so you aren't going to give one sport any priority over another sport? So, you are telling me a national title in softball is equal to a national title in football?

Well, let's see, they are only the most successful sports program this nation has ever seen. They do plenty of RESEARCH and show which sports are the most popular from a NATIONAL perspective. So yes, College basketball is obviously signficantly more popular from a NATIONAL perspective.

Exactly, talk about a flawed system if a Men's volleyball national title would be equal to a BCS football title.

those sports are still part of an athletic program so yes they count but at a discounted value.

UF may be #1 and LSU #1a, but I think LSU could overcome UF in the next couple years. UF has had success for a much longer duration than LSU.

I'm not sure how deep UF is in success as far as track, women's athletics, etc. Once again, those things are still part of an athletic program and LSU's success in those could make the argument for outright #1 in this decade.

I agree that some sports should be given more weight than others. But the SEC regular season basketball champions is in no way greater than a CWS and national championship for baseball.

Edit: It was LSUPatrick that posted SEC regular season champs should be ranked over CWS champs, not you Stromile, sorry I got confused.

BINGO!

At most schools, College basketball is valued a lot higher than college baseball.

LSU and Florida are the two top athletic programs in the country right now, just not in the SEC.
I think it goes like this
1) Florida
2) LSU
3) Texas
4) Ohio State
5) USC

I'm not arguing with you about that. I believe its much much harder to win a basketball NC. That should be weighted. But a regular season conference championship shouldnt be weighted over a baseball NC.
