Bear vs Mac redux?

Mac and Miles both love(d) to play tough defense and run a conservative game plan on offense behind a strong running game.
Sure, Les has a decent record vs Saban, but the last two losses cost us one championship and is potentially preventing us from playing in another.
Alabama, under the Bear, probably prevented us from potentially competing for several MNCs back in the day.

How many mulligans did the Bear get?
Did the bear play as many weak schedules as Saban has had the past two years and next?
Just curious....I wasn't alive then...Well, I was for part of it, but too young to care.

Mac never beat Bear if I remember he might have beat Bear one time
Miles can beat saban more than once

Not really.
The best shot would've been in 1973 when Bama came into TS with both teams 9-0 and came away with a 35-21 win. But even then, LSU was only ranked 7th going in.

More than a few, but he owned Mac throughout the 60s and 70s.

well, Saban doesn't own Les, nor do I think he will in the forseeable future.

Mac beat the Bear the last year Bryant coached at UA. Some say that's why he retired. I do remember that Bear lived in Cholly Mac's head 24/7. Mac even hired a guy to pace the sidelines in a houndstooth hat during practice one year. His inability to beat Bama was one of the main reasons fans turned on him. We were usually good but never good enough to beat Alabama. I don't ever remember threatening a national championship if only we could beat Bama though.

the last two losses (to Alabama) cost us one championship and is potentially preventing us from playing in another.
I think during the old 7-3, 8-2, 9-1 Mac years, LSU was every bit as much of a powerful team for those times as we have been in these modern times.
Gotta remember, the schedules were not padded by twinkie "rent-a-wins" like now. Add two or three of those modern cheap "w"s to Mac's record every season and his numbers would skyrocket. The closest thing to an annual "given" victory in those days was the Tulane game at the end of every season. Later on, even that got "iffy" after Mac left.
But there was always Bama and the Bear lurking near the end of every season - last 4 games usually went something like this: Ole Miss then Alabama, Miss State then Tulane.

Different system back then.
He won titles in 64 and 73 when he lost bowl games. 64 was the last year the AP award a NC after the regular season and before the bowls. 73 was the last year the UPI (Coaches Poll) did that. BTW 65, the first year the AP did a poll after the bowls, Bama won because the top 3 going into the bowls all lost.
He also split a title in 78 with USC who beat them in B-Ham 24-14. That's on top of 73 when they split with ND who beat them in the Sugar Bowl.

MNCs
Heres the key. Don't get all caught up in the MNCs. They are nothing but the result of a corrupt polling system and driven by broken agendas. Until there is a playoff, all of it is horseshite.
Using the broken systems logic from last year, Florida should be playing for the MNC; they have the best resume. It's all BS until we get to see them play it out on the field.
How many SEC titles did Bear win compared to Cholly?
Les has 2
Saban has 1, MAYBE 2 after Saturday

no its not, Mac was like 2-16 agains Bryant.
Miles is 3-4 against Saban and its only 4 because of the unprecdent BS mulligan from last year.
Since Saban has been at Bama, the regular season game is 3-3. The first 3 years, 1 team or the other was clearly much better. LSU in 2007 was the much better team. In 2008 and 2009 Bama was much better. The last 3 years the teams are relatively equal and its 2-1 Miles in the regular season, late in the year matchup.
All this doom and gloom about never beating Bama while Saban is there started in 2008, we've beaten them since, we will beat them again.

actually using last year's logic, the "eyeball" test, Oregon should be in. They look like the best team. Resume favored OSU last year.

It's not just how Les does head to head against Saban. It's also how LSU does against everyone else compared to how Bama does against everyone else. 2011 is the lone season where LSU rolled through its schedule the way Bama mostly did in 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012.

However, I'm thinking the difference between the Bryant/Saban and Mac/Miles numbers could be due to the fact that Bryant is still the best coach of all 4 and his numbers would be about the same (as versus Mac) had he coached against Les Miles back in that era. But all this is speculation - it's like the old game of trying to figure out who would have been the greatest Heavyweight champ - Ali or Marciano. Lots of opinions, but no way to truly test. Haha.
