I know the extent of what he is getting paid here and it isn’t shite compared to the rest of the staff. I also know his value to this team and he is underpaid compared to what he brings to the table.

You THINK you know how much he makes and you THINK you know his value to the team.

The reason why Coach O gave him the rare title of General Manager, is so that NFL teams would take notice. I agree that Austin was never really cut out to be a coach, but he needed to develop an on field football acumen and he’s done that.

Austin also manages LSU’s NFL Player relations. The executive/administrative aspect is very vital at the NFL level. If it comes down to money I believe Coach O and Avella would match any collegiate job offer.

Where's your source....
Or is the same source that said Gruden was done at Tennessee too?

What are other people paid in similar positions?

I think people are confused as to what the market for his position really is. Someone posted yesterday, and many posters agreed like sheep, that Austin should be paid $1 million.

If that’s the market, great, but it’s not. The NFL average for a Director of Player Personnel is around $475,000. Director of College Scouting is around $250,000.

This kind of microanalysis and opinion, especially from a small silo of understanding, is absolutely ridiculous. I mean really, why can't any of our coaches move up and around? If they're blessed and great, we could have a chance of getting them back at a higher level some day. You want all the dudes you like to hang around the same place, do the same thing and get 10% pay raises forever? So short sighted.

If he's willing to make a lateral move like that, then it must simply be for pay.

He wasn't mentioned in the administration raises article last week. Mother fricking Joe Alleva.

I think everybody in the building knows how much Thomas is worth. Like a poster said earlier if he’s also getting paid by TAF he’s Getting well compensated there was a reason he was brought back and he came back

Recruiting is more than just calls or in-home visits. It’s a lot about knowing where and who to recruit. Understanding the recruiting landscape. That’s what Austin does, he’s the macro guy; recruiters, quality admin, report to him now. His administrative/GM role has actually grown this year.

The goal for Austin is to gain as much GM experience as he can so that he can make that NFL Director leap.

People just want to bitch that he’s underpaid and blame Alleva, but no one will post what they think he is worth, or what others in his role are getting paid.

You're absolutely right. Nobody ever makes a lateral move unless it's for more money. Wait...if it's more money, is it really lateral?

It couldn't have anything to do with working at his alma mater, or living closer to his family.

And it surely couldn't have anything to do with getting closer to the Haslams. He has NFL aspirations and the owner of an NFL franchise also happens to be a prominent power player at UT. Where might he get noticed more, at UT or at LSU?

Not "always". Only since Orgeron hired Jenkins when he got the interim job last September. They obtained a waiver from the NCAA for Austin to recruit for Jenkins. They structured Jenkins deal so he was a transient employee (basically month to month) and this allowed them to get the waiver for Austin to recruit in his place. Once Jenkins officially retires, Orgeron will replace him with a full-time position coach, thus eliminating the need for Thomas' waiver.
10th coach goes into effect Jan 9th. There is the possibility that AT would recruit in that coaches spot, not the DL. If 10th guy is indeed a S/Teams guru with little experience recruiting, that would make sense.

That's one of the valuable things about AT, as long as waivers keep coming, you can go for 1 coach that is more coach than recruiter and not lose anything on the trail.

ETA: AT will always be drawn back to Tenn. Home is home. It could be money, it could be that... could be both. But the biggest draw for him is a place to build his name and resume (like any sane person). He's good at recruiting, he likes recruiting (primarily the evalaution/scout aspect), and it is part of that resume. It's something someone like him in a jump to the NFL would want to point at. So being able to be a recruiter might be the X factor in whether he goes or stays. The offer of that could be the deciding factor. The idea that he "has" or LSU is "forced to put up with him" as a recruiter is a false narrative. It is a win-win, a win for him and a win for the program.

I agree. I was originally responding to someone asking why his role would be diminished.

why do you refuse to understand that what LSU pays him is not his total compensation? it has been enumerated TIME AND TIME AGAIN that TAF pays him more than LSU and he is very well compensated.

This is absolutely false. Whoever has enumerated this is making it up.

He’s not getting paid anything by TAF. Alleva has to ask for that and the BOS has to approve it and he refused too eventhough O has asked him to repeatedly .
He’s leaving because FKing and Alleva are trying to run this football program into the ground

He has no more clue than any other blow hard on this board that speculates and tries to pass it off as fact.
