What a crazy career arc. Did not see him having this much success in the "show".
His brother was a lock, but he is a surprise.

Yes, a great defensive shortstop while at LSU. He was a solid utility player when he made it to the show before settling in at catcher.

Yeah he played SS. He played just about every position for Seattle in 2019, so it shows just how versatile he is. It also shows his perseverance and willingness to do whatever it takes to play on the big stage because I'm sure he hadn't played catcher consistently since he was in Little League

Bet he's caught a lot for his brother while training though...
I know they train together according to an article a while back.

He was the best defensive shortstop in LSU history-- and it isn't even close. He changed games with his amazing plays and he was ultra consistent on top of it.

Talk about a late bloomer. Making your MLB debut at 30 to making a list of top 10 catchers in the MLB the next year.

He was a high level defender at LSU as SS
It’s a little surprising he settled in at Catcher.

I believe it was actually the Marlins that moved him to catcher a few years ago.

Happy for him. Known him since grade school and he is one of the hardest workers I know
I can still remember when we thought it was cool to jog or walk off of the field.. not him. That dude ran sprints on and off the field between innings

It was. I listened to an episode of the podcast Effectively Wild when they had a guy from Mariners organization that was in charge of scouting minor league free agents the year they signed Nola. They had signed a few other guys the same year that made a big league impact as well. Pretty much the best MILB free agent class ever when you consider almost none of them ever make the majors, so to get close to 4 WAR from a class of them it's incredible.
The biggest thing with Nola was his attitude and willingness to learn. The guy said he had every intangible quality you could ever ask for in a guy making a move to catcher. Even he didn't see this type of success coming, but in the same vein he said it's not all that surprising due to his work ethic. (If I'm remembering it correctly)

I'm sure you soured on Bregman after college but Nola was not indisputably better defensively than Breg. Breg was in the SC Top 10 more than once in a season and was great at a routine level as well
