What hotels are good/safe to stay at in ATL for the game that are in walking distance to the stadium?

Anything downtown.
Midtown is really close and has more to do.
Team hotel is Marriott Marquis

Perhaps you should look in Buckhead and find one close to the Buckhead or Lenox marta station. You could walk to the train line and take it straight to the stadium. There is a Grand Hyatt, Intercontinental, Embassy Suites, JW Marriot, regular Marriot, Hyatt place, and Hampton Inn all less than .25 miles from either line.
If downtown, you could check out the Omni or the Embassy Suites. Both near centennial park. If staying downtown, I'd advise staying Northeast of the stadium.
GL, won't be cheap

We’re staying at the Embassy suites in Alpharetta. Lived there for three years so we’re familiar with the area. Plenty to do/see/eat/drink. Its far enough away to not have jacked up rates too. That’s probably going to be a downside for most though. It’s easy to get downtown though, Uber to north springs MARTA station(it’s the northern terminus) and take the red line to Five Points.
