At some point our Baseball Program has to show development from within

Jay Johnson is a stud coach, but it’s been wild how we have leaned on the portal for so much.

Jacob Berry
Tommy White
Skenes
Riley Cooper
Holman

Not sure who to give credit for regarding the studs from last year….

Crews
Dugas
Beloso
Morgan

The portal will continue to feed needs, but I would have hoped in year three we would have had some program builders set to lead. Really disappointed that Travinski, Kling, Pearson, Frey aren’t carrying this thing.

You get the point though. Hoping we see some of these sophomores and freshman make strides in the next 5 series.

Because that makes a difference where he developed them?

I get your point, I’m all for going out and getting guys who’ve proven something at this level somewhere else. You do have to get high school talent who can play multiple years to have consistency.

You’re right….I guess I should be so simple minded to think that the head coach is the only thing in a program that effects development. Not like staff or support staff or facilities available or resources or nutrition and anything else goes into it

Jacob Berry freshman season at UofA

.352 avg
19 doubles
17 HR
70 rbi

CJJ can take credit for recruiting Berry and signing him, but Berry was developed prior to UofA.

So was Skenes
So was Crews
So was Tommy Tanks

Yeskie coached Cooper when he was at Arizona (not here).

Wanaka coached Berry all 3 of his years in college

If you think that Arizona has better resources and facilities than LSU in baseball, then I don't know what to tell you..

Do you realize both of those guys were recruited by Jay to Arizona and followed him to LSU after a single season at Arizona?

If they developed or their talent was recognized early, that is Jay Johnson's doing.

Tommy White

Under Jay, White has developed into an outstanding 3rd baseman.

Crews
Dugas
Beloso
Morgan

Those mostly belong to PM, though Morgan spent more time under Jay, but PM recruited all those guys.

One of these is not like the others. Trav was a PM recruit and has been significantly better under Jay than he was in his 2 years under PM. This far this season he has more RBIs than all of last season. Of course, he is also playing a bit more. And I do agree I was expecting a bit more leadership from Trav.

Kling Person, Frey, And Neal are not doing like any of us had hoped. But it is only halfway through the SEC schedule in their sophomore year for Kling, Frey, and Neal. I have seen guys suddenly (often inexplicably) flip a switch mid-season. I just don't think any of us should expect that for our own sanity. Kling seems to be looking marginally better but still not looking comfortable in the box most at-bats.

Morgan spent the same amount of time under Jay as Crews did.

This is a terrible argument. You posted Berry's freshman stats. Jay coached him his freshman year. If you want to say that Berry was already developed before getting to college, and you want to hang your hat on that then okay.

But if that's the case and he was so developed out of high school, why did he make it to campus at Arizona?

I meant more under Jay than Paul, sorry I should have been clearer about that.

I knew what you meant, but you singled out Morgan even though him and Crews were in the same class.
