Much better.

I'm just going to accept that you're ignorant about the club's intentions and that I'd lose any argument with you as I would a fence post.

Since the early 2000s...when both the cubs and Astros were pretty good. Unless you're one of those people who thinks unless you win a World Series you suck.

Posted by tickfawtiger WHY would anyone waste $/time, on an organization like the Astros ? Seems ownership has been milking the MLB tv contract money for years and years ! Very little progress has been made in making the franchise competitive....as if they don't care so, whay should the fans care/contribute ? I wish the team could be relegated to a lower league, as is done in European pro sports !

You know how I know you aren't a baseball fan?

One world series champ per year....that's the GOAL, the vast majority do not reach the ultimate goal so, no all the other teams do suck.
Finishing with a winning record, reaching the playoffs etc. are other goals which well run teams strive for...don't always reach but you can see the effort/results, more often than not !
What I can't stand is programs that are fine with taking the MLB tv $,thus screwing their loyal fans year after year....understand ? Teams I place in that sub group certainly include the cubs AND Astros...that's a fact. Their management has been abusing/taking advantage of very loyal fan bases for years...yes, maybe even DECADES at a time...why would anyone support such greedy ownership groups ? 20+ games out of first at mid-season, won't cut it with me anymore !

Because we apparently have different opinions of who and how to pull for a baseball team.

i cant speak for the Cubs, but it appears that the Astros have no commitment to winning for at least the 2014 and 2015 seasons. why would anyone pay for a product when this appears to be the approach of the organization?

tickfawtiger and any others who say why waste time on the Disastros,

Houston is fully immersed in a rebuilding stage after the previous owner, Drayton McLane, let his organization fall apart. For some time, as many Houstonians knew, McLane wanted to sell the team but was asking way too much for a team that at the time. He only did what was necessary to run and field a team after 2005/2006, when our World Series pursuits unsuccessfully ended. From 2006 until the sell of the organization, the team slowly but surely fell into its current state. They traded away players to save money (Hunter Pence, Michael Borne, etc.), refused to sign any decent vets, and drafted players they would eventually not sign. Once Jim Crane took over ownership and control, he has started bringing the organization back from the ground up. He hired Jeff Luhnow, the former Cardinals scouting guru, as GM who is doing a really good of stocking the cupboard, so to speak. He has made really good draft selections the past 2 seasons, almost all of which were signed, and has left tons of free money around to sign bigger name/quality vets once the younger prospects develop. Right now my Disastros are pathetic and I know it, but the future looks very bright! They currently only have about 2 players worth noting, and the rest are normally AA to AAA players at best. I expect a few more years of bad records, but come 2015/2016, I am expecting the Astros to be very competitive and possibly making a pennant race. Until then, keep bad mouthing us, but when the bandwagon comes full circle, please let it run you over.

Sincerely,

A life long Disastros fan.

but they still appear to have the mindset of "well, we're going to suck this year anyway, so spending money on free agents is just a waste"

Because I've been an Astros fan since I went to my first game when I was 8, I'm not gonna bandwagon on some other team while they're down and rebuilding, and I go to Astros games every year and it entertains me; I enjoy it.

Bringing in Matt Albers, Chad Qualls, and Darin Downs to the bullpen would be "spending money"

ETA: also trading for Dexter Fowler

Rouge,

I agree it is miserable right now, but if you take the stance of "ok, lets just make as much money as we can because we suck and wont make any serious noise, but then take said earnings and reinvest it into talent, scouting, and player development" it really isn't a bad way to go. Luhnow knows how to build an organization and learned from the best in the biz. I trust where he is taking the organization and I can see the plan. It sucks to suck and have them go all in on maximizing profits, but if they do it properly to build a long lasting competitive organization again, I am fine with it.

ETA: Any smart business person would do the same. They are doing what is best for the organization with what they were dealt.

Houston really is building a monster. The Nationals went from dog crap to penthouse really quickly and I see the Stros doing the same. Washington got Strasburg and Harper in the draft, both of which have panned out well. They also signed key vets and got solid players to fill in the roster, but also developed younger guys who could step up if called upon. It is taking time for Houston because the shelves were whipped out but Houston will return to its former self.

unfortunately, you have no idea whether this is the case or not. how many millions are being throw into the minors system with the money being saved now? My guess is not many.

The only silver lining is the HOPE that if some of these prospect do pan out as one would hope, they will pay the serious bank with the money that they are saving now.

In the past 2 seasons, Houston has signed nearly all of their draft picks. They have also made good trades for good prospects. They have reinvested some of the money, but they are also holding some of it back for when the team is competitive, that way they can sign a big name player. They are saving to sign a $100 mill, $50 mill type of bigger named vet who could add a lot to a good team. Saving money to purchase top tier talent for when the rest of the squad is ready to compete is smart.

ETA: The proof is in the pudding. The Stros are investing in the minor league system and are doing a lot better job of signing good talent throughout the organization. Crane is not McLane, that is for sure.
