Like it or not - baseball players that are pitchers are pitching more today than they ever have in baseball history. Year round players that pitch never give their arms a break - hence the arm soreness, surgeries, etc. I'm not blaming travel ball, showcases, etc., I'm just saying that this type of single sport concentration is more prevalent today than just 20 or 30 years ago.

I agree. Quick question though. If the kid was a 3 sport star, but those 3 were pitcher, QB, and javelin would he have the same problem?

3 very different throwing motions and mechanics.

Correct. And not nearly as much stress on the arm as what a pitcher goes through.

I really think it’s because today you have people throwing 92-95 for 7 innings. It hasn’t always been like that. And like Ben McDonald said. Young arms aren’t ready for that.

If a kid pitched and threw javelin, he would most definitely have arm problems.

Also with today’s technology.... people are finding ways you can throw harder by using more than just your legs. So by doing that they are hurting their arms more IMO. Also I think the arm slots play in effect now because they are throwing at higher velocities at different arm slots.

Should we start recruiting more based on projections of future availability based on prior usage? What's the point in signing guys like Jake Latz, Nick Storz, etc. if they never can pitch?

More like vagina soreness. They have to treat these guys like divas. 20-30 yrs ago, players just pitched. You're going to be sore.

No one knows if they are gonna get hurt. I mean we’ve all seen pitchers leave LSU without hurting at all. It could happen to a kid that wasn’t used a lot in high school.

Name 10 guys in the majors that threw 95 mph for 7 innings. The games is not the same as it was 30 years ago.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but I'd sure like to see at what age guys like Jake Latz and Nick Storz started pitching, and if they were year round baseball players. I do believe there is a correlation between a kid starting to pitch at 8 or 9 years old - and pitching during summer, fall and spring until they are seniors in high school - and if they make it to the next level - having arm soreness and surgeries. This is opposed to a kid who starts out pitching at 8 or 9 years old and only plays summer travel and school ball, sits out to play football or basketball, track or soccer, etc. I think that kids arm will last longer. Talent being the same, of course...

I could be wrong here but I pitched, played some QB and I threw the javeline-javelins and football stress your shoulder pitching really puts a ton of stress on your elbow. Also with a football I was typically trying to hit my target in stride, javelins I focuSed in every movement as technique was everything. Almost every batter I faced I threw the ball as hard as I could at least once in the at bat.

My sister has my nephew on travel ball teams and I couldn’t imagine playing as much as he does. He only plays baseball too. I wish she would get him in other sports. I can only imagine how many innings these guys are throwing in showcases and stuff.

I started pitching when I was 11.... and should have gotten TJ surgery when I was 16. But at the time people just thought it was soreness. My brother started pitching when he was 8. He had TJ surgery last year. Because of the technology we have today we are able to see things that we couldn’t 10-15 years ago.

I did both and didn’t have any problems.

Mind you i never hit 90 mph and the farthest I ever threw the javelin was 170’

Maybe we should just start pitching underhand.
