The big money in hoops comes from the shoe companies who want guys wearing their merchandise. They sign contracts with coaches, and allegedly pay players to play for certain coaches, universities as part of the package.

There's a lot of gray area because they're allowed to sponsor star player's high schools and AAU teams and coaches, and can also funnel money to them that way.

The boosters under the table stuff has been going on for decades and is small potatoes compared to the shoe companies.
