Plus, we have the DBs that can run this scheme. A lot of man to man with a single high safety and the other safety playing near the box. Adams should thrive at that role.

Yep. Caputo had over 100 tackles and 6.0 TFL last year.

We need to get back to man coverage because that's how we have recruited our DBs. If Rashard comes back in January like he mentioned he would about a month ago, LSU will have two lockdown corners in Robinson and Toliver. Both 6'1+ and 200+lbs.

Outside of the 4 ints, I think Adams played much better in his role last year and he only started twice all of last year. Put those ints together with his play near the line last year, and you will have a monster safety who will act like another LB.

and if it is truly like Wade Phillips defense, our other OLB should rack up sacks as well. I wouldnt be surprised if that is Lewis Neal most of the time.

Godchaux would likely be our NT in a 1 gap. Flanked by Herron and possibly LaCouture

Agree with pretty much all of that. But think Lac might be the NT with Godchaux as the end. But who knows? Like it either way.

seems like you'd want the ultimate disrupter at NT with the 1 gap scheme and that is Godchaux.

LaCouture gets zero pressure. id almost say that he doesnt fit at all in this scheme, but we're going to need his size because of our numbers.

just thinking of old wade phillip's defenses, that had Jay Ratilff at NT with 2 DE's that were bigger than he was. Marcus Spears being one. Pretty worthless rushing the passer but held up well vs run. That would be LaCouture. Drop some weight on him and see if he cant get up field any.

So the question becomes, if this is so good why doesn't everyone use it?

Well done OP.

I work with a Wisconsin grad...I'll use this to pick his brain on Monday. Based on our previous college football convos, I think he'll give a fair assessment.

Yep. One starting OLB had 14.0 TFL and 8.0 sacks and the other had 19.5 TFL and 9.5 sacks.

Not all DC are big thinkers. Aranda seems to be a young bright guy that knows his X's and O's and looks for ways to solve problems by adjusting his schemes. Reading up on him, he comes off as the type that's always looking for ways to get advantages. His approach has worked great for him so far and I imagine it will continue to.

Excellent work! I am stoked about this hire. I truly hope he's down on the field working through each series with the D.

Next year, this D is going to be nasty.

be in this kind of D?

Zone schemes tend to give this type of defense trouble but it also can be blown up big with good individual efforts at the point of attack

With our talent and athleticism, I would like our chances the majority of the time against a good zone run game

Power run attacks have a ton of problems with this defense

Key will be on the side with the numbers advantage for the D going 1v1 with an OT or a RB has to pick him up. Either way, its good for us. He will be in that "mismatch" role IMO.

And don't forget - he is still growing too. He will add some size and being in a scheme that plays to his advantages will make him difficult to block. Reading correctly, he will get a lot of TFL and sacks.

Really excited about Aranda's coaching philosophy and scheme

Does anyone know how well of a recruiter he is?

Agree with that.

But I also think Godchaux is a natural DE in a 3-4. He just might have to play NT because we have nobody else that can do it. If we had a true NT, Godchaux would be at a DE in the 3-4 and would be damn good at it.

And the more I think about it, the more I agree that Lac will have trouble fitting this scheme. But we will need him. I think he would be ok at NT. His best strength is he can take on blockers pretty well. NT is the 1 spot where you would see double teams in this D, so maybe he could do that. He won't be nearly as disruptive right there as Godchaux would be, but he could do it.

I just think Godchaux could be an elite 3-4 DE. He's a natural fit right there IMO.

Godchaux, Lacouture, Gilmore, and Herron are all ideal DEs in the scheme. Somebody will emerge as NG out of that group.

Appreciate the info.

Being much less knowledgeable than most here, I must ask if LSU has the talent to run this scheme.

Thanks.

Given that each player has a different gap responsibility, how difficult would this be for LSU's players to learn?

To me, that's the biggest question about this hire. Is this a defense in which players can make a lot of mistakes with less than a year of playing in it?
