We didn’t fire BK to hire a dud.
In theory, yes.
quote:
Our money people know who they are hiring.
They don't. The firing was reactionary when egos and tempers flared on Sunday. The initial discussions among the donors were about trying to get the money together to potentially/likely make a move at the end of the season. Then everyone got pissed off on Sunday and Kelly was gone (1) without any forethought as to what happens next and (2) a firm plan of how they are going to tackle the buyout other than trying to leverage BK into taking a lower amount.
quote:
It will be Lane. Or another competent name.
There's no captain of this ship. The donors don't trust Woodward with autonomy to make the hire (they blame him for BK...and the big buyout they are having to eat). There is no university president. Though the McNeese president will soon get that job because he's Landry's guy. In turn, he will just sign off on whoever the donors pick. In short, the list of candidates are literally the guys who "poll well". That's NOT hyperbole. The Governor, with his big campaign donors on the BOS, will be heavily involved because Landry wants the publicity
That means the "list" is two names: Saban and Kiffin.
They will try to use all of their clout, connections and money to get Saban here. I estimate in about 1-2 weeks you'll start hearing the Saban rumors in full force. It aint happening. Saban doesn't want to get back into the college football mess.
They will then turn to Kiffin...who you know is LOVING this attention. Only slightly less than his agent, Jimmy Sexton. They were already going to use the open Florida job as big leverage against Ole Miss. Now LSU, with an impulsive and inept group leading the "search" has joined the party to make this a 5 alarm fire. The end result will be Lane being the highest paid HC in the country...by Ole Miss.
After that, there is no "list". And with no central figure leading this search it will 10-12 Indians with no chief all wanting "their guy". My guess is that if you had to name a third option it would be Sumrall because he's already in state. How strong that option remains will depend upon how Tulane finishes the season.
quote:
Landry, like him or not, we couldn’t have fired BK so promptly without him.
That's true. And it would be fine if his involvement ended there. But it won't.
quote:
We are pretty much destined to be what Nebraska has become. Buckle up folks!
I would say the downside potential is more Tennessee post Fulmer to Heupel where donor disagreement, political meddling, and firing AD's who wouldn't do their bidding led to a decade plus of Derek Dooley, Butch Jones, Jeremy Pruitt...despite big talk in EVERY search of them landing a "huge" hire.

It won’t be Lane.
Landry and a few close advisors are making the pick. Woody isn’t going to have any say.

No? Anytime you have to whack a coach in the middle of the season, it is not a "big break", no matter what you thought about him.
There are no guarantees that we (or any other school needing a coach) will make a good choice for the next coach. There is no guarantee that ANY of the players we have here will stay.

LSU is a sleeping giant in Louisiana. We care about football here.
Fla and Aub rather be basketball schools.
That’s like saying LSU doesn’t care about football because they’d rather be a baseball school.

You have no idea what you would do, its like all the poor or avg income people saying if I won the lottery I wouldn't be broke in 5 years id be responsible with my money. Thry have no clue how to handle that type od wealth and no idea the temptations that come and are about impossible to give in to when you have that type of cash.
Same goes here, you or I have no idea what we would do, but id be willing to bet, we would be as money hungry as the rest of them, especially when you pay a guy to do all that for yiu and he's the best in the business at it.

Could be that LSU is a slimy place for football coaches.

The only big break I see is this broken team. Gonna take a lot of hard work, time and patience to get it fixed.

It certainly adds some promise to what has turned in to a dismal season.
As for ‘big break’, that’s always a gamble: Hire the ‘big name’ and personality (like Kiffin) or grab a promising up and comer (like Key). Because of NIL, the likelihood of grabbing and grooming the next Saban are slim.

Yea, good luck with that. You'll have idiots wanting the new guy fired the first season.

You 20/20 hindsight MFers smh.
history gives one perspective. BK was considered a home run hire at the time and ended up sucking. The point is even if you get a home run hire tomorrow, nothing is guaranteed.

He will have all the support, and be a day 1 celebrity in Louisiana. It will be easy to be LSU HC after BK. (BK did some good stabilizing but he was an unlikable dick)
This isn’t true. LSU is one of the toughest jobs in the country — right up there with Bama and Georgia for expectations. You can go from hero to villain within 4 hours any given Saturday. His first SEC loss and the “he’s in over his head” talk will start immediately. It’s highly possible that the “fire ____” chants could start in his first season.
Head coaches know this. It’s why I do not think Lane will come here unless LSU pays significantly more than Ole Miss feasibly can. He’s got Ole Miss rolling, why would he walk into another situation? Especially since BK shot a hole in the “anyone can win here” narrative.
Brian Kelly proved it’s not as easy to be a HC and win at LSU as people thought. We all said if buffoons like Miles and Orgeron can win, anyone can. BK is no buffoon. The “anyone can win here” narrative was fan delusion, I highly doubt coaches saw it that way, but it felt good to say — either way, it’s LONG gone.
Say what you will about his coordinators or mistakes. And all the hindsight excuses as to why we should’ve known BK was a bad hire. It’s all true, he was in over his head, but the simple fact is that the winningest active coach in college football came to LSU, had four shots at 10 regular-season wins, and missed every time.
It’s a hard place to win because winning is hard everywhere, and it’s even harder to be the HC. Anyone taking that job is leaving an easier one behind.

Maybe, but surely you can see how this, by the end of the season, could as bad or worse than when coach O left.
I hope it isn’t but the ingredients are all there. Say we lose the rest of the SEC games, and that is clearly possible (not likely, but we could also lose to Western Kentucky), recruiting coaches leave, 30 or more opt outs for a meaningless bowl game and then that many transfers. This is definitely on the slate.
A new coach is NOT going to want to keep many on the current staff.
I’m crossing my fingers that these things don’t come to pass.

Highly possible. I sincerely hope not.
