Hillard had a great year. Don't want to discredit what he did AT ALL. He was great for LSU this year. His curve ball is nasty, but I think he has a lot of work to do to crack the rotation all season next year.
Lol, our most consistent pitcher this year and Freshman all-American will most certainly be a starter in 2019, barring injury.

I am not discrediting what Hillard did this past season. He stepped up and was great. He is a really good pitcher.
However, if every pitcher returns to what they should be after recovering from their respective injuries, Hillard isn't in the top 5. Hess, Walker, Stortz, Labas, Marceaux (and I may be leaving someone off) are all more suitable starting pitchers.
Hillard may begin the season as a starter, but I don't see him remaining there unless:
1- a few of those guys do not return to form from injuries
2- Hillard develops another plus pitch before the season starts.
Again, this is not even the smallest knock on Hillard. He would probably be fine as a starting pitcher for LSU, but the pitching staff is so absolutely loaded, that he may be better used in middle relief.

I just imagine Hess throwing 96-97 fastballs for 6-7 innings followed by Hilliard out of the pen with those nasty curves... It would almost be unfair for the opposing batters

Until Storz shows he can stay healthy and throw strikes, you can't put him above Hilliard. The guy threw 2 IP last year, he has all the talent but until he puts it together consistently he isn't better than Hilliard. Again, not saying he can't get there, but right now he is closer to Latz than Lange.
Same goes for Labas, it might have been injury, but his stuff was really pedestrian, and he got hit hard way too much. Maybe if his fastball comes back and isn't 85-87 he will be an SEC weekend guy, but that is yet to be seen.
The fact that you are putting these guys ahead of someone who showed they can dominate SEC competition is mind boggling.

I think everybody has said IF those players return from their injuries and have the stuff they are capable of they will be above Hillard.
Nobody is knocking Hillard by saying this. He is a solid pitcher. Storz, Labas and Walker have shown better stuff than Hillard pre injury. If they return to that, they have the ability to be better pitchers.
Hillard has a fastball that sits around where Labas' did this season. What you saw from Hillard was closer to his ceiling than what you saw from Labas. That's what people are basing it off of.
