All of these “off season” threads about the greatest this and greatest that got me to thinking about what I saw while a student at LSU. That greatness was Peter Press Maravich

I know it is hard for some of you to believe that a 6’5 1/2“ white guy could cross your arse over and passed better than Magic and everyone else that ever played or shoot better than Steph Curry, but he was all that and so much more. He shot 45% from everywhere in the freaking gym including well beyond the 3 pt line. Additionally, there was no shot clock, no 3 pt line, etc. He would have averaged 55 with a 3 point line...
He still holds the record for the most points scored against 5 or 6 SEC opponents...

Kind of like how he wasn’t good against African Americans?
His first 3 games as a “Soph”...
he scored 48, 42 and 51 his first 3 games.. there are some seriously funny people on here.

Maravich holds nearly every major NCAA scoring record, including most career points (3,667), highest career scoring average (44.2 ppg), most field goals made (1,387) and attempted (3,166), and most career 50-point games (28). And he accomplished all this without the benefit of the 3-point basket, which wasn’t introduced into the college game until the 1986-87 season.

If y’all think CJ was great, get some perspective... Those are the top four single-game scoring performances in LSU history. He holds seven of the program's top nine single-game marks, plus he's tied for 10th with 55 points in a game. LSU guard Chris Jackson reached 55 points on one occasion; Maravich did it six time
Oh yeah all you bull shitters about his scoring. Three seasons:

Fourth in LSU history in career assist average: 5.12 assists per game

Brady brought a small camera that Saturday, one of those then-trendy models with the flash cube on top that rotated with each exposure. Tied with Robertson’s record, Maravich came down and missed five straight shots on five straight possessions.

“I never saw him do that in my life,” Borne said. “Then he hit the sixth one, an 18-foot jump shot.”

By that time, the flash cube on Brady’s camera had nothing left.

“We were out of flash bulbs,” Brady recalled with a smile. “But it was something I’ll never forget.”

Reporters and cameramen, many from across the country, rushed the court after Maravich’s record-breaking shot went down. He amazingly did a brief on-court interview then went back to business. He ended up with 53 points on (get this) 21-of-46 shooting.

Even more remarkable: Maravich dished out 12 assists that night. And his 53-point effort doesn’t even rank among his top 14 single-game efforts.

Enjoy... LINK

Talk about a record that will never be broken is 44.2 ppg..... and he did that for three years........ nobody is gonna touch that. I know it was a different era but the basket is and was still 10 feet and he found a way to put it in said basket better than anyone........ I saw the other day that Steph Curry made like 105 straight three point baskets in practice. Anyone who think Pete could not do that is crazy......

Another thing that is sometimes forgotten is that he would have taken many more 23-25 foot shots if there had been a 3 pt line.

Besides getting another point for the shots he actually made that were 3 point distance, he likely would have not taken any shots just inside the line when he knew he could shoot just about the same percentage from a few feet farther back.

and without the 3 point line...

I watched him play as a youngster and there is no way for me to convey the force Pistol Pete was on the court..

were there facets to his game that had room for improvement... sure no doubt.. but as an offensive weapon he is unrivaled imo..

A fun fact about Pete..... his dad made him dribble the basketball outside the passenger door all the way to school....... think about that for a second.......

I remember against Georgia (I think) he individually froze the ball with a dribbling exhibition for the last two minutes of the game (maybe longer) and before the final horn blew, all 5 of the Georgia players were chasing him all over the court to no avail. This was an away game.

Do any of the other old timers like me remember that instance and more importantly does anyone know where there might be an ole video of that instance.

Maravich

The only reason he got so much playing time at LSU was because his dad was the coach.

I saw Pistol Pete plays in person several times at LSU and more than I can recall when he was with the Jazz. Greatest ball player that I have ever seen and I’ve seen Jordan, Magic, etc. Pete could do things with a basketball that others could only dream about.

Re that Georgia game.....in the last seconds, with multiple UGA players chasing him, Pete dribbled to half court, pivoted & dribbled to the far side of the court, pivoted again and as he passed back over the mid court circle, dribbling at full speed, he launched a hook shot, nuttin but net, and he never broke stride, running off the court through the tunnel located at half court. There was dead silence & then the arena exploded. There is a video of that shot out there somewhere but there was no tv coverage back then. Had there been an ESPN around, Pete would the first LaBron.

Kinda like he wasn’t recruited by everyone in the country. Or how he didn’t drop 60+ against Walt Frazier one of the greatest defenders in NBA history. Made him quit during the game and beg for help.

He was a year ahead of me at LSU...what a guy. He never acted special but would come around people on/off campus never acting anything but just another student. Always had a smile on his face when not on court...many stories but I will leave those in the past...there will never be another Pete.

He has the NCAA record for most free throws made in a game, went 30 of 31 from the stripe against Oregon St. in 1969.

I was a weekend warrior at the Navy Base in Belle Chasse. Pete was going to be playing on TV in the early afternoon one Sunday. I got of duty at noonish due to an admiral inspection. Rushing home to see the game my car got stuck in passing gear going up the hi-rise on Belle Chasse Hwy. In a panic, it never occurred to me to put the car in neutral or turn it off. I stood on the brake and got down to 35 mph at the bottom of the bridge, aimed the car at a junk yard at Engineer Rd. and rolled out the door. A ditch stopped it before it got to the junk yard. THEN I thought of turning off the ignition to avoid a fire. Car was repairable.

Most astounding record Pete has to me is this.... he scored over 50 points in a game 28 times. If someone today scores over 50 points in a game, they call it a career.

Have you ever heard of opposing fans carrying a player off the court after he beat them in OT?
That’s how freaking great he was...

Here is an interview about it:
SIMON: Do you have a favorite Pete-Maravich-on-the-court moment you can describe or something that would help us understand his characteristic artistry?

Mr. KRIEGEL: In Athens, Georgia, where there really hadn't been too many basketball fans before Pete came to the SBC. At the end of his junior year, last game, he scores 25 of the last 29 points in regulation time to put the game into an overtime period. He is magical in the first overtime. Then the game goes into a second overtime. He is even more magical in the second overtime
.”

What happens is something that has never happened before. The fans in Athens, Georgia, start booing the home team and cheering Pete as the final seconds wind down. And as they count off the seconds, he tosses up a 35-foot hook shot, without really looking at the basket. And of course, it splashes right through the net. And the Georgia fans carry him off the court. That was Pete Maravich.

That’s one hell of a story. Did you get to watch the game?

Another issue that Pete faced was that, for the most part, he had no help in scoring. Many many games he was at least double teamed, in some games, tripled. And that never slowed him down.
